To Donal's family, I'm so sorry to hear that Donal has passed away. I worked with him for years in Dun Laoghaire and have very fond memories of how kind and helpful he was, always making time to pass on his vast knowledge. Never shy of a lively discussion, it's sad to hear the great man quietened. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h'anam.
Though I'm very, very far away from Bray these days, I found myself wandering up Putland road by way of Google Maps today and thought of the McMahons, in particular Oscar and his father Donal for whom I did some summer work about thirty years ago. A cursory search on the family name and I found this notice and was immediately saddened. I remember Donal's sharp wit was second only to his dry humour, and many memorable moments flooded back to me - one of which in a Clonskea pub with Oscar, Patrick and Donal where I was chided for drinking Carlsberg: a comparison with equine pee was offered by the big man himself and the next pint in front of me was a Guinness -- a choice I continue to make to this day. I sadly lost touch with Oscar after moving away and I take this opportunity to leave my best wishes for the entire family.
Sincere condolences to all Dónal’s family. A patently good man who gave a lot to his community over the years. He will be remembered. Rest in peace.

We had the pleasure of being introduced to the UCD "gang" in 1982 through Sean and Barbara Prendergast, and for some reason we just "clicked" with Donal and Betty. We became firm friends and frequent visitors to Rutli during our time in Ireland, which we maintained afterwards until Donal was unable to engage in a telephone conversation.
Our condolences, love and warmest wishes go out to their children and grandchildren, with a special prayer for dear Betty.
I offer my deepest sympathy to Donal's wife, children, family and friends. I did not know him personally but, as a child, I used to see Donal and his wife, Elizabeth and their children at Mass in Queen of Peace Church on Sunday mornings. It always struck me from afar that he was a kind and gentle person and I am sure his passing will leave a deep chasm in all your lives. May his gentle soul Rest in Peace.
