Donal O’Connor

I'm so sorry to read of the death of Donal and I offer my deepest sympathy to those who loved and now miss him.
As Editor of the evocative stories in Tom Buckley's collection "Of Tarbert", published in 2016, I wrote the following in my 'Editor's Preface' when drawing attention to the rich heritage espoused by people such as Donal:

'And I myself had the privilege of engaging in dialogue with the remarkable Donal O'Connor at the shore of Coolnanoonagh on 15 August 2014, in order to sketch out as fully as possible his knowledge of the tragic, multiple drowning that traumatised Tarbert and the wider community on the corresponding date in 1893. People such as Donal, widely recorded, offer authoritative and tangible links to our past and our heritage is the poorer if we neglect to record them.'

I'm sure Donal will know that I recently recounted the story - in Irish - to a group of aduts who were engaged in the recovery of their native language and that they were much much moved. And I hope he was pleased. What a great loss is his departure though I'm sure much rewarded elsewhere.
