My deepest condolences to Paddy, Olive, Eoin, Kim and Odhran on an enormous and devastating loss. Many fond memories of hilarious and controversial debates with Donal, be it as children in Cloonanorig or semi adults in UCC. We were never on the same side of the debate but always laughing collectively by the end of it. So saddened to hear of his passing. I'm so sorry.

Ah, Paddy and Olive, how does such a fitting home - from which teaching is nurtured, in which education is prized and its scholarship revealed in one of the most informed treatises on the forces at play in the origin and early development of Irish primary education - cope with the loss of an adult child, especially one so obviously humane and accomplished as Donal? Through what comes unfailingly to you: mutual support, heightened love and a pride that the life you gave him was so highly valued by his peers.

Completely lost for words at the news of Donal's death. My heart goes out to you Kim, Eoin and the rest of Donal's family. I remember Donal from the years at Gaelcholáiste as smart, quick witted and laid back. He seemed like nothing could faze him. Can't believe he has passed, so saddened for you all. I will be thinking of you, and Donal for a long time to come.
