Dónal O'Neill

At the University of Iowa in the late 1980s and early '90s, Donal helped to raise the standard of what it means to be a successful PhD student in Economics. Far more than that, he (together always with Olive) raised the morale and determination of Iowa students with his constant good cheer, self-deprecating humor, and excellent work habits. In my mind's eye I still see Donal smiling mischievously in front of the blackboard, explaining the mathematics of Kuhn-Tucker conditions or some other technique. God bless you, Donal, and thank you. Oh my gosh, speechless and hard to write even 24 hours after receiving the news. Spent a glorious 4-5 years with Donal in Iowa where his lovely sense of humor and special personality endeared him to us. Last memorable meeting was Great North run in Newcastle when Olive was expecting, Sadly, we lost touch except for couple of emails after his Maynooth move. His wit, cheer, love of life and intelligence will keep his memories alive amongst all of us who studied with him in Iowa. Sincerest condolences to Olive and the girls, also the rest of the family. So sorry to see this news. My Sincerest sympathies. it was my pleasure to meet Donal in the Mater Private last month. He felt so proud & blessed always surrounded by his lovely family.
