I offer my most heartfelt condolences to the O’Sullivan family upon the death of Donal just before Christmas! Donal was a highly intelligent and affable man and I loved talking to him about local and maritime affairs and history whenever I had the chance to meet him in Dun Laoghaire!
Only six months ago he delivered a very informative and thought provoking lecture to the Foxrock Local History Club about Dun Laoghaire Harbour that was very well attended! I hope that his maritime history research is appreciated by many people for years to come!

So sorry to hear that news. Donal made a tremendous contribution to sailing in Ireland, especially Dublin Bay. He leaves a legacy of fine historical books - most notably "The history of Sailing in Dublin Bay (1984)" & "The National- a chronical" (2020). He had an incredible knowledge of all things sailing in Ireland. He was kind, generous and helpful member of the National YC for 60+ years and will be greatly missed.

Such a loss. I spent many hours with Donal in hislittle office discussing the history of the National Yacht Club which he was writing at the time. He was undoubtably the most knowledgeable authority on Dublin Bay Sailing. I do hope that his archives will be donated to the Lexicon (Local history section). I will miss Donal greatly, my condolences to his family.

I am sorry to hear the sad news of Donal's departure. Condolences to Bairbre, Eoin, Niall & Donal's crew.
Donal was a regular competitor in many classes over the years. Enterprise, Fireball, Wag, Ruffian, & Shipman classes. While sailing he found the time to run Dublin Bay Sailing Club as Honorary Secretary for 27 years, some task for a volunteer for such a large and active club. To commemorate the club's centenary in 1984, Donal, after much research recorded the occasion with publication of " Dublin Bay - A Centuary of Sailing". Donal later published "Ó Kingstown go Dún Laoghaire". More recently in 2020 Donal published "The National - Chronicles of a Dun Laoghaire Yacht Club" to commemorate the Sesquicentennial of the National Yacht Club. Donal's dedication in that publication records "In memory of my dear wife Maureen, who, with perfect good humour, put up with her husband's sailing activities for over 53 years"
We will miss Donal's good nature, knowledge & humour. The Oracle of racing in the bay has taken the ebb tide.Thank you Donal for all you have contributed, you will be missed.
