Thinking of Evelyn and family, my great neighbours. RIP Donal.
Dad grew up on the family farm before heading off to Ballyhaise Agricultural College. From there, life took him to Carlow, where a surprise was in store for Dad,the handsome young Donal met a 20-year-old Evelyn O’Donnell.
A relationship grew,one full of love, but just as importantly, plenty of fun.They created a home that was warm, happy, and always full of support. We couldn’t have asked for more.
60 years later and it is very hard to talk about one without the other. In recent years Mam cared for Dad with a dedication that only comes from a lifetime together. Mam cajoled, charmed, and fought to make sure he had everything he needed. And if there’s one thing we all know for sure, it’s that Dad was happiest on his own couch, in his own house, surrounded by family. Thank you Mam for making sure that he got that.
I asked Brian and Michelle to sum up Dad in three words.
Brian said: Compassionate, Loving, Caring
Michelle said: Strong, Genuine and Gentle
I think they summed him up perfectly. Dad was the definition of a "proper Dad"—he cheered us on through every success, no matter how small, and was always there for us through any bumps in the road. He quietly listened, gave the best advice, and always knew just what to say. He gave the best hugs but could also silence us with just a look if we stepped out of line. He was a lovely granddad, and he truly believed his grandchildren were the best grandkids in the world. We were all so lucky to have this man in our lives.

Deepest Sympathy to you Evelyn, Caitriona, Brian and Michelle on Donal's passing.Donal was a true gentleman and we all have such wonderful memories of the many times we sat down for a chat. We usually had a good laugh at the antics of Caitriona and Fionnuala from school days onwards. Donal will be greatly missed by all who knew him. His Funeral Mass was beautiful especially Caitrionas contribution, perfect.

We were saddened to hear of Donal’s passing. Donal was a tremendous help to our club when we moved to our new home in ‘The Meadows’ in Graiguecullen. He provided us with great knowledge and worked tirelessly to ensure our club had the best playing surface possible. May his gentle soul rest in peace

Donal & I both hailed from the Great parish of Clologue Co. Wexford and when I moved to Carlow 35 years ago Donal and Evelyn warmly embraced me & looked after me, as his neighbours child!
In the days when membership of Carlow golf club was very elusive, Donal used his very persuasive powers to secure membership for me! and he and Evelyn have been kind and loyal friends ever since.
