Don was a close friend during our days together as doctoral students at the University of Illinois and at CU Boulder. He was good-hearted, funny, smart, and supportive. I am grateful for our friendship those days, and wish we could have stayed in contact more in recent years. Don, I wish you a blissful final journey. All the best to the family.

Condolences to Don's loved ones. He is gone far too early. I first knew Don as "Dr. Lyons" and was one of his many students at UNT. After graduating our paths continued to cross. I still have fond memories of a hiking campout myself, Don and several friends went on to the Ouachita Mountains in Oklahoma. It was cold and snowed but we all had a great time. His big laugh and kind personality will be missed. May he rest in peace.

I wanted to send my sincere condolences. Don was my professor for the July 2002 British Isle Field School at UNT. We became fast friends during that trip and remained dear friends until his death. I lived in Denton about a mile and a half from he & Daisy and even played soccer w/ Daisy for a few years. I fondly remember all the walks in the park w/ our pups. Don was like family and when he moved away it left a huge hole in my life that never went away. But I understood he needed to go and be w/ his family. We kept in touch in the beginning but unfortunately lost touch with each other as the years went by and the phone calls became fewer and fewer. I kept thinking he’d come back to Texas but sadly that was not meant to be. We had many great memories together between lots of great UNT BBQs, meals, holidays, field trips, the ups and downs of everyday life and our pup walks, Don was always there to lend a hand, listen, wipe my tears, be bluntly honest w/ me when I needed it or not & above all make me laugh, even at his own expense. I lovingly called him “Old Man” and even made him an AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) ID card as a joke for one of his birthdays. He loved it and would say, “Now Gail!”. The world got a little quieter and a lot less interesting with Don’s passing. He was a great professor but an even greater friend. Don will always remain in my heart and my memories. I will miss you “Old Man”. Save me a seat at the bar. I’ll be there soon.

My heart aches for your loss and ours, particularly Tomás. Don was a beautiful person, educator, and friend. After participating in his field school through UNT, I used to come home at Christmas and walk down the street from my parents house to visit him in Denton. After he moved back to Cork, I came to visit him again in Cork years later and he met me at the train station unexpectedly. He took me and my husband around the area, fishing in Ballycotton, some historic sites, and we had a good chat. He will be truly missed
