Dr. Brendan T. O'Kennedy

Sincere sympathy to Émer, Niamh, Neal, Steven and Alan on Brendan's passing.
Brendan relocated to Moorepark in ca. late 70s, early 80s following the closure of the Ballygagin research station. It coincided at a time when I had secured funding for a new research project and Brendan provided the necessary scientific assistance to get started. With a background in plant physiology following his academic fellowship at the University of Illinois, USA we wondered how the new arrival would adjust to a research programme focused solely on milk. However, there was no need for concern for within a short time Brendan opened our eyes to innovation in the food industry based on novel developments in functional ingredients irrespective of plant, animal and marine sources. It was to become the start of a long research friendship and collaboration for me and my departmental colleagues. Looking back, I think that we never got around to asking whether he intended to stay on! Brendan was most comfortable in probing products and processes at the macromolecular level especially if ideas could be applied from observing self-assembly structures in nature. His was the world of food biopolymer systems – speaking of which, I hope that he packed enough coffee for the journey. Rest assured Brendan

Sorry to hear of Brendan’s passing, sincere condolences to the O’Kennedy family. Back in the early part on my career Brendan was my mentor and I was very grateful to him for his scientific guidance and support. In my discussions with Brendan I often ended up with more questions than answers but that was his special way of teaching and making you think for yourself. It has stood well to me. May he rest in peace.
