Deepest sympathy to Simon and the family on Brid’s death. A wonderful woman, she will be sorely missed. Suaimhneas síoraí dí
I just learned at the weekend of Bríd’s sad passing and I am truly devastated. I am so sorry for our loss. I say ‘our’ as Bríd was a true advocate for peace, nuclear disarmament, justice and human rights and because of that she is a loss to all humanity and not just to her loved ones. People like Bríd are essential in the struggle to create a truly peaceful and just world. I was actually thinking of her on the 6th of August on the anniversary of Hiroshima, she never forgot and never gave up on fighting for what is right.
To Bríd’s devoted and inspiring husband Simon and her beloved children Oisin, Sibéal and all her family and friends, I am truly sorry for your loss. I hope you can take comfort in the knowledge that by her existence she contributed to the struggle to make this world a better place. I feel privileged to have known her. I still have the front page of the Irish Times from the June 1994 Euro election with myself and her beautiful little son Oisín in my arms. I can’t believe I won’t talk to her again, she was an inspiration. I am so sorry I missed her funeral and the opportunity to pay my respects and commemorate a wonderful woman who never stopped struggling to make this world a better place. May she rest in peace.

I was very sorry to hear of Bríd’s death. The last time I met Bríd was when she was cycling along Merrion Square and stopped to talk to me about a historical reference she had come across that she thought might be of interest to me. The encounter was typical of Bríd: her determination to carry on with her research in defiance of her illness and her generosity in sharing her scholarship with others. Bríd was also delightful company with a sharp wit and a good sense of humour – even about her illness! My condolences to all her family and friends.
Laoch ar lár í Bríd. Ba bhean chróga dhásachtach í. Méala mór a bás ní amháin dá cairde go pearsanta ach don tír agus don phlainéad.

Dear Simon, Oisin and Sibeal,
Thank you so much for keeping me up to date with Brid's final days, something that meant a lot to me. As you know I think, Brid and I enjoyed something of a special bond, despite the two of us living in different countries at any one time. I shall always remember her as a fighter with a sometimes dark sense of humour we shared, maybe inherited from our common McGrath background.
At the culmination of all of this, I expect that all of you be feeling a massive gap in your lives. Indeed, even for me at a greater distance, a life without Brid is one that is less vivid and less full of laughter.
Much love and all the very best, Pauline and Stephen.

Heartfelt condolences to Bríd’s family on the passing of a woman of great integrity and creativity, and a gracious and generous scholar. Always willing to share the fruits of her research on early modern Ireland, and notably on urban culture, she will be greatly missed for the loss of her knowledge and kindness.

Deepest condolences to Simon, Sibeal and Oisin. Brid was one of the brightest and most informed librarians I ever knew. We were at library school together. She was also on scholarship in Marsh’s Library working alongside the former Keeper, my mother, Dr Muriel McCarthy also sadly gone RIP
My condolences to Bríd's family. So many of the tributes that I read here I would sadly add from my long acquaintance with her in history circles. Christopher Woods.

Comhbhrón ó chroí le Simon, Sibéal agus Oisín in bhur mbris. Tá bean uasal, álainn, misniúil, flaithiúil imithe uainn. Bríd was passionate about things - many things - in the best possible way, so generous with her time and her advice. Listening to her sharing her vast knowledge of early modern Ireland and other areas was an education in itself. She brought major projects to completion while dealing with her illness - being the force of nature that she was. Her inquiring and independent mind shone through in her appearances on Raidió na Gaeltachta in recent years. Is trua go mór liom go bhfuil an glór bríomhar sin ina thost. Brón ar an mbás. Solas agus ceol na síorraíochta duit a chara.
So sorry and saddened to see you go Brid. Thank you for all the laughs, life lived to the full, and so much positivity that you shared with us all. Fond memories always. Simon, Oisin and Sibeal, thoughts and sympathies with are you. Hugs.
Sincere condolences to all of Brid's family. I lost touch with Brid since Covid but have very happy memories of all our discussions when she contributed to courses I was teaching at the School of Social Work and Soical Policy, TCD. I'm sure we did discuss how to use databases and write literature reviews, but my main memories are of hilarious debates about the superiority of Connemara Irish, the therapeutic value of reading PG Wodehouse and the doctrine of transubstantiation! Rest in peace, Brid.
Deepest sympathy to you Deirdre , to Siobhan and Brid’s family and friends at this sad time .

I have very fond memories of Brid through many years: her intelligence, energy and enormous positivity, even in very difficult circumstances; the rigour, seriousness and sense of purpose she brought to all her professional work; and on a personal level, our many entertaining conversations, her wide and passionate interests, sense of humour and the many insights and pieces of good advice she generously shared with me.
