So sorry to hear of Flicka's passing. What a beautiful lady. May she rest in peace.
Deepest sympathy Tim & Shona & extended family on the death of your beloved Flicka Rest in Peace. May the Lord guide & protect you during this very sad time.
I was so sorry to hear about Flicka's death.
She was my tutor on a module on the Irish Food Culture course in UCC just as Covid hit in 2020.
At a time when none of us had much experience of on-line teaching, she made the weekly sessions interesting and fun, as we explored the role of food in literature, music, films and art. She pushed me way out of my comfort zone in rewriting a play and performing it over Zoom.
I am still slowly working my way through the long list of books that she recommended, and I loved the fun and intelligence that she brought to everything.
I always enjoyed her company whenever we met.
I was terribly sorry to hear about Flicka's passing. A few years ago, myself and Flicka were assigned a class of First Year students each, and we worked on them to complete a project on the short story. At the end of the project, we came together for each group to give their presentations, and I'll always remember the amazing rapport Flicka had with her students: they were swapping books, asking questions, showing her their work, chatting to her in the hallway. It was as good and constructive and mutually respectful a relationship between students and their tutor as you could have.

Whenever I met Flicka at conferences, she was always curious and enthusiastic - about everything, not just Joyce! And I remember that whenever I'd meet her, she'd always ask about my partner Natalie, whom was in Flicka's MA class. She was a kind and funny woman, very down-to-earth and always interesting to talk to. I've always loved Joyce myself, and I know that when I read Ulysses in the future, I'll be thinking of Flicka.

Everyone liked Flicka, and that is the best kind of legacy.
Thinking of you, Shona, and your family at this difficult time. May your Mum rest in peace and your memories of her bring you comfort.

I was shocked and saddened to hear the news of Dr Small's passing. I was a student of hers during her time teaching at UCC. Dr Small approached her academics with unfaltering enthusiasm. She was exceptionally kind and encouraging, and would remember the individual interests of each of her students. Once, she borrowed a book from the library on my own area of interest and surprised me with it. I was only a first year undergraduate student at the time. She allowed me to rent the book under her name. It was a thoughtful and much appreciated gesture. My sincerest condolences to her family and friends, and to her children, in particular.
Filicka was a wonderful, kind and generous lady who Patty and I first met in Kenware about 45 years ago. She gave us lodgings for the weekend in the top floor of the Pantry which she then ran as a wholefood cafe and shop. Over the years she was always a joy to meet and catch up with, most recently in her new house in Guileen. As always she filled us in on her family and the joy you always gave her. She touched so many lives including ours and we feel so fortunate to have known her.
A wonderful person whose smile and good nature was a joy to behold.
She will be sadly missed by all.
Hard to follow the beautiful tributes of Deirdre, Noel and others
Can I add my deepest sympathy to the family of Flicka on their loss.
Great memories of meeting her in Trieste, and other Joycean occasions.
We will not forget her
"Natures first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold
Her early leafs a flower
But only so an hour
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day
Nothing gold can stay."

Rest in peace dear Flicka
I am so sorry to hear of beautiful Flicka’s untimely passing. Deepest condolences to Tim and Shona and family. Though I haven’t met you, I feel as if I have because your Mum spoke of you so fondly, so often. I first met Flicka at a Yeats conference in New York, followed by the Trieste Joyce Summerschool. Wonderful times ensued in the Joyce world, from Finnegans Wake tutorials in Trieste to Bloomsday Film Festival where we were delighted to end up in the same programme. Flicka was a breath of fresh air - fun, erudite, enthusiastic, full of inspired ideas - a great comrade and supporter. I feel very lucky to have known her, and her blithe spirit. She will be sorely missed. May Flicka rest in peace, and her legacy live on to inspire us.
So sorry for your loss Shona, Tim and family, she was a lovely lady xx
So sorry Shona and family on hearing about the death of your mother.
"A ray of light".

One of the many warm, personal and, even in laughter, always moving tributes to you, Flicka, in Midleton on Wednesday afternoon.

May Tim, Shona and all your family draw consolation and comfort from having someone as precious as you centrally in their lives.

Then onto beautiful Watergate where among the further tributes was a recital of James Joyce's poem: 'At That Hour', representing your passion for one of his passions. Food.

Just one of your many, diverse passions in a life well lived.

'At that hour when all things have repose,
O lonely watcher of the skies ...

At that hour when soft things come and go,
Soft sweet music in the air above,
And in the earth below.'

Farewell for now, Flicka, and may that same earth rest lightly o'er your gentle, genial soul xxx
Sincere condolences on your very sad loss. While we never met in person we connected through social media and Flicka was a wonderful supporter of our campaign. May she RIP.
So sorry to hear of Flicka's passing, a lovely person, may she rest in peace, deepest sympathy to her family
My deepest sympathies to all of Flickas family and friends.
I am so very sorry to hear that Flicka has died. This was absolutely too soon, she was just getting into her stride, Joyce - wise (I'm so grateful that she encouraged me to read and savour his work). Her family gave her the greatest joy, and her new found house by the sea promised further contentment. Flicka had much to live for and so much more to give. I am very thankful to have been touched by her open, cheery and enthusiastic friendship.
On behalf of all the members of the Joyce Institute reading group I wish to extend deepest condolences to Flicka's family. Over the past few years she had spearheaded Cork-based Joyce studies and shared them with us in Dublin. We looked forward to learning more from her researches and her untimely death came as a great shock. May her legacy live on in the place of Joyce's paternal roots and may her spirit remain with all of us who seek to better understand his world.
Sincere condolences to Shona and Tim and extend family on the sad passing of Flicka. What a lovely person.May her gentle soul rest in peace

Dearest Flicka, it’s so hard to believe that you are gone. I treasure the times we spent together, near and far, and the palpable joy of being in your presence. Thank you for every moment of it. I’m going to miss you so much but very glad of all the tales we shared, particularly Odysseys, our exhibition at Crawford Art Gallery. I’m grateful for having known you and been your friend. You are unforgettable.

My and Anthony’s love and deepest condolences to Tim, Shona, Jess, Eoin, Rian, Ailbhe, and all of Flicka’s family and many friends.

To paraphrase James Joyce, she lived and laughed and loved and left.
My deepest deepest condolences to Flicka's family and friends. Flicka opened a show at my gallery in June 2019: 'Olives, Oysters and Oranges' and she was a regular visitor after that. I have treasured and cherished all her visits since then. A very special lady and I am sure a very special mother, grand-mother, mother in law, sister and aunt. I am already missing her. Rest in Peace dear Flicka. Olivier, Dublin.
Tim and Shona, Flicka was a light that brightened the world, and I am so saddened at the news of her untimely passing. My earnest sympathies on her passing. She was so proud of you. She was a wonderful, joyful and generous person, and we celebrate her great work on James Joyce. She will be missed. Pat
So very sad to hear the news of Flicka's passing. Sincere sympathies to Shona, Tim and all of the family.
R.I.P..You are beautiful..
My sincere condolences to Flicka’s family.

I first met Flicka through our mutual friend, Pat Callan. I enjoyed her company on many Joycean occasions, including the Joyce Summer School in Trieste in 2019 and the International Joyce Symposium in Trinity College in 2022. Flicka was wonderful company, a warm, eloquent and engaging conversationalist and an avid Joycean in all facets of that ‘state of being’. Latterly, she had been a member of the James Joyce Institute of Ireland reading group, happy to share her own insights on the music and poetry of Finnegans Wake as she was eager to hear the views and the insights of others. We miss her and will remember her with great fondness.
Dearest Tim, we are so very sad to hear of your mum Flicka's untimely passing. You mentioned her often, and with such pride, on your times in our house with Philippa. This learned lady was the first to make us aware of Joyce's Cork family links, and Cork cultural life is clearly the poorer for her passing. Our deepest condolences to you, and to all her family, on your great loss.
