My heart goes out to you Sheila on the sad loss of Paul. I have only heard of Paul's passing and remembering that we met only a few weeks ago in St.Thomas' regularly on Wednesday morning's. We soldiered for many years on the Vestry and had some great and happy times. The world has lost a gentleman and a scholar.
May the good Lord mind him for ever.

To Sheila and family - My deepest sympathy to you on the death of Paul RIP.
I did my first bursary with Doc Hillis in 1995, we had so much fun, he was my first introduction to a true scientist, so passionate about his work. I completed 3 bursaries with him, learning so much before I became a permanent member of the team. I have very fond memories of him. I hope you find peace and comfort knowing what a full life he lived and what life he brought to us. Wishing you peace.

Sincere sympathy to Sheila and family on the death of Dr. Hillis. May he rest in peace.
Sadly I have only just heard this news and wish to convey to Sheila and Family, deepest sympathy on the loss of Paul. Working in the same line of fisheries science (AFBI) in Northern Ireland I attended many scientific meetings with Paul and completed several North/South joint projects. Paul was always the life and soul of meetings which were otherwise rather dry. To my long standing friend and Colleague RIP
Deepest sympathies and condolences Sheila and family, I worked with Paul in the early days of the Marine Institute (FRC in Abbotstown) and ultimately took over his post when he retired. Standing on the shoulders of giants comes to mind when I think about how we subsequently built our scientific understanding on the pioneering work of Paul. He was a consummate gentleman, generous with his time and knowledge and fountain of information on a wide range of subjects from prawns to economics to birds, churches, history, etc. It was a great pleasure to know him, may he rest in peace.
Sheila and Family, deepest sympathy on the loss of Paul. You were great neighbours during your time in Hollywood Park and Paul was great company either explaining the secrets of marine life or the merits of home brewed beer. May he rest in peace.
I am very sorry to hear of Paul's death and wish to extend my sincere sympathies to his family. He was major contributor to bird conservation in Ireland and did a significant amount of work for BirdWatch Ireland (formerly the Irish Wildbird Conservancy). I have many good memories of our chats together over the years: he was always very personable and great company.

Sheila and family my deepest sympathy to you all at this sad time of Paul passing. May he rest in. Peace
My dear Sheila,

I was deeply shocked to read of Paul’s death in Saturday’s paper. May I offer my deepest sympathies to you and your family. The loss of such a companionship after so very many years is something very hard to bear.

He had a life of many achievements: scientific, church, song and more. Perhaps I like to remember more than anything else was his part in contributing to the life of the community first in the grim offices of Cathal Brugha Street and then in the marvellous surroundings of Abbotstown. We were a very privileged lot, perhaps above all in the joy of the company at our lunch, tea and coffee breaks where the atmosphere was so warm and to which Paul made such a contribution.

Our ways have long since parted, down to annual Christmas Eve encounters at St. Patrick’s, so sadly suspended over the past couple of years. But the memory of a good friend and colleague will give me pleasure for ever.

Our friend Jackie will, I hope, be able to pass on my sympathy at the funeral which I so regret having to absent myself from as I happened to be hit by Covid this week.
Sincere sympathy to Sheila and family on Paul’s sudden passing.
Sheila my sincere sympathy to you and your family
