I was saddened to hear of John's passing today. I worked with him in the Richmond, Beaumont and (JCMH) Blanchardstown. His humanity, gentility and care for the person shone like a beacon. The staff who worked under his aegis loved him and were influenced by his practice which was so obviously people first. Academically he was a good research colleague and gave great encouragement to the NCHDs. He was innovative in dealing with mobility and social problems and was what an idealised doctor should be. I offer my condolences to the family and friends. May he rest in peace.
Dear Jan, Lisa, Jonny, Susie and Ross
Sending you all much love and sincerest condolences from us at such a sad time. We have many many happy memories of John from our time in St Catherine's and hearing about all the laughs you had playing cards with Mum and Dad, Donal and Ethel amongst some of the fun and happy times.
John, Ethel and Mum and Dad are up there no doubts getting up to high jinx!
Love Allie, Fin, Jake, Rachel and Tania

With deepest sympathy to the family of this kind and brilliant doctor who I regarded as a great friend and a marvellous companion, and whose wisdom and practical guidance was a great help to many of my friends.
Sincere sympathy to Dr Lavan's wife and family on his recent passing. I worked with him on the Whitworth ward in Beaumont hospital many years ago. He was an excellent physician and a gentleman.

The club is saddened to hear of the passing of John. He was a much-loved figure in the club and one of the central players in the three successive Irish Senior Cup titles in 1962, 1963 and 1964 and went on to be the men’s club captain in 1987. May he rest in peace.
I have very fond memories of working on 'Dr Lavan's team' as an occupational therapist in JCMH many years ago. He treated his patients with great care and compassion. I remember the pride he took in offering a specialist prosthetic/rehab service to elderly people from all parts of the country who had experienced lower limb amputations.
Sincere sympathy to his family
