Belated sympathies to all of Martin’s family and many friends and colleagues.
I was a student of his in the 90s and greatly enjoyed and appreciated his wisdom, wit and wide breath of knowledge and his ability to apply it seamlessly and with depth to such a variety of issues.
I very much admired his then innovative approach to Irish culture and identity. Like himself, it was refreshing and vivacious! Martin will be missed by so many.

To Michelle, Heather and the Croghan and Cullen families.
I was deeply saddened to learn of Martin’s passing over the weekend. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had the privilege of Dr. Croghan’s expertise over my years on the B.A. in Communication Studies at DCU from 2000-2003. Martin was a true educator – his passion, knowledge and energy was unmatched.
They say if we are fortunate in life we will meet a small number of people who will leave a significant impact on our lives. For me, Martin was one of those people; his encouragement, kindness and wit has left me with nothing but fond memories. Martin encouraged me to pursue my goal of academia and I am enjoying my career as a lecturer for nearly two decades now.
Of course, it wasn’t all academic, we had many great conversations about Gaelic games and he was a true lover of hurling and our beautiful national language.
My deepest condolences to you Michelle and Heather who he spoke about so often with pride and deep love.

Sincere condolences on the passing of Martin. He was a lovely lecturer during my time in DCU. Always a gentleman. Respects to all the family.
Martin was on the small faculty panel that interviewed me for a lecturing post on the pioneering Communications degree at the (then} NIHE in 1980. In his work on linguistics, Anglo-Irish literature, and particularly Hiberno-English, he opened up spaces for the Humanities that contested more narrow visions of a university. My sympathies go out to Michelle, Heather, and the extended Croghan family at this time of sadness and loss.

Síncere sympathy to all the Croghan and Cullen families, especially his wife Michelle, and daughter Heather, on Martin's death. Martin was lovely, full of life, and fun. As a child, I remember him calling to our house in Bantry. He always spoke so lovingly of Tom and Mary. My mother, May Jamsie, was very fond of Martin. I haven't met him for years, but anyone lucky enough to meet him would never forget him. He was a big character, but at the same time very unassuming. May Martin rest in peace.
