Heartfelt condolences to Deirdre, Eoghan, Conor, Muireann and all the Kennedy family.

I had the privilege of having Michael as my GP trainer. During this time I witnessed first hand the many qualities that Michael possessed. He was warm and friendly, professional, calm and composed, always punctual and extremely organised and efficient. He always left his door ajar between consultations so that I could pop in to ask him a question whenever the need arose and Michael was always more than happy to help. I was also struck by how Michael sent a Christmas card to everyone of his previous GP trainees and how he kept in contact with them all. This for me summed up how caring and thoughtful he was and how he was so much more than just a GP trainer.

Following completion of my GP training i continued to work alongside Michael. When Michael received his diagnosis he met it with a fearlessness that was truly inspiring. He continued to come in to the surgery on a daily basis to continue his duties in the best way he could. He always made light of his own situation, continued to smile through it all and continued to emanate a positive attitude to everyone around him.

I learned a huge amount from Michael but mostly how to be a good person and a good doctor. He was incredible and inspiring. He has left an everlasting legacy.

Meeting Michael at CrossFit and getting to know him was truly a privilege. He was inspirational in many ways but at the heart of it all, he was simply a good man who was a pleasure to be around. He made the world a better place by being in it. We will miss his dogged determination in the gym, his good humour and his warm smile. Condolences to Dr Michaels family, friends, colleagues and patients. It was always a pleasure meeting Michael, and his parents whilst visiting as a Pharma Nurse. Michael will leave a huge void to all who knew him. May his many memories give comfort.

So sorry to learn of Dr Michael’s death – I can’t remember when I first encountered him but what struck me from reporting on his inquests at the North Cork Coroner’s Court over the years was how compassionate and sympathetic he was to families who had lost loved ones.

He was also most helpful to the media in reporting on those same inquests, generous and patient, always willing to clarify matters for us and he kindly facilitated our attendance at inquests when hearings resumed after Covid restrictions were eased.

Deirdre sincerest sympathy to you and all the Kennedy and O'Reilly families on the untimely passing of Mike. We were in the same class in UCC, also in the same clinic group, and Mike was always an inspirational classmate and person. He was friendly, kind, caring and compassionate, qualities which he transferred seamlessly to his work as a GP and a Coroner. I, and other classmates, always looked forward to meeting up with him and you at our class reunions every 5 years and it is very sad to think that we will not be meeting him again in person at future reunions though I am sure he will be there in spirit. He was a gentleman to his core and he will be remembered. May Mike rest in peace.

I knew Michael back in the 80’s, when he was a GP Trainee on the Cork GP Training Scheme, of which I was Secretary, at the time. He was then quite simply, an absolute gentleman.

Mairead and I were extremely sad to read of Michael's very unexpected death. We had the pleasure of working with Michael and his general practice colleagues on many occasions over the last 30 years - a gentleman, a great teacher and a professional to his fingertips. But I never saw Michael without a smile - his warmth was infectious and made him such a key figure to his colleagues and, I'm sure, to patients and family. He is sadly missed.

I would like to convey my sincere condolences and support to Deirdre and children and all the family on the very sad passing of Michael. Michael has made invaluable contributions to many mental health projects of the NSRF and UCC over more than 20 years, an he was a great colleague and friend. He will be missed by many.
