Sincere sympathy to the Hanley and Corboy families on the sad passing of Dr. Mirette. I had the pleasure and expierience of working with Portland Estates in Ballinacurra Gardens in 1969/70/71 and also at La Ramure North Circular Road on the extension to the main house and the new swimming pool. The house cook Nora was under strict instruction from Mirette any person working overtime were to get tea and home made scones if Nora was off Mirette would give out the tea and scones her self on a few accasions that i was working extra late Mirette being the lady she was cooked dinner for me and gave desert as well. I have often told this story of her generosity and kindness her contribution to the Construction Industry /Youth Services /The University of Limerick and her native Limerick City
Where she planted the seeds of prosperity.

I am a proud Limerick man.

So Sorry i was out of the country at the time of her death.

The Light of Heaven to an exceptional Lady .R.I.P

Mirette lead a remarkable life that made a significant contribution to the betterment of the public and civic life of Limerick and further afield.

Mirette served as founding Chair of Plassey Campus Centre Limited (PCC) and over 26 years played a major leadership role in developing Ireland’s first purpose-built, large-scale, self-funding student accommodation on the UL campus.

Ed Walsh had seen purpose-built student accommodation in the US and wanted to develop an Irish version on the campus of what was then NIHE.

In defiance of the strident oppossition from the Dept of Education, Ed gathered some ‘friends’ of NIHE who formed the not-for-profit company PCC chaired by Mirette.

Their first project was a modest 120 rooms. This quickly grew into a company that would become for years the largest provider of student accommodation in Ireland and an international leader in the field. Today, PCC has almost 3000 purpose-built rooms for student of UL. Mirette provided key leadership in this development.

Eventually, the Dept of Education would copy the UL model across the university sector nationally.

Mirette has left an enormous footprint that will benefit countless future generations of students in the pursuit of their education here in Limerick – a life well lived.

On behalf of the Mid-West Branch of the Construction Industry Federation (CIF), I wish to express our deepest sympathies to the family of Dr Mirette Hanley Corboy. It is an honour to wear the same CIF Mid West Branch Chairpersons chain as Mirette done with distinguish for many years.

Mirette served the Mid West branch tirelessly both locally and on the National Council before becoming the first female president of the CIF in 1981. Mirettes company Portland Estates Limerick Limited built many of Limericks housing stock, and contributed to the establish of the University of Limerick as she was on the Governing Body of the National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick prior to it becoming a University.

During her time with the CIF Mirette took a keen interest in community affairs, giving unselfishly of her time as Chairperson of the Board of Limerick Youth Service, which was involved in the training and caring for under-privileged, deprived and abused children. May she rest in peace.

So sorry to hear of Mirette’s sad passing. Wonderful memories of fun, laughter & song. Sincere sympathy to Nigel, Mirette & Melvyn, Noelle & Eileen & the extended families. May she rest in peace, Heaven is the richer for her presence.

Dr Mirette Hanley Corboy served as a Governor of UL for over 16 years. Mirette is remembered as one of UL’s most dedicated and engaged Governors who played a vital role in the development of our University.

She gave of her time, her intelligence and her ingenuity and designed the financial concept which allowed UL to build the first loan-financed student village in Ireland which eventually saw all Irish Universities follow suit! She is remembered by all who knew her at University of Limerick as a lady of great charm and remarkable ability.

My sympathies and those of the entire UL community go to Mirette’s children and her wider family.
