Dearest Penny and family so sorry to here of the loss of your lovely mum.
As your friend, she welcomed me into your home 40 years ago and could not have been kinder then or since.
Wonderful memories of a great lady. Richard and Isabelle
Dear Paul, Karina and Family
My very deepest sympathy on the death of Pauline who was a wonderful caring and compassionate doctor. She was a renowned paediatrician who greatly contributed to paediatrics and child health, education and research both in Ireland and internationally. She was a much valued Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, a Founding Fellow of the Faculty of Paediatrics RCPI and President of the Irish and American Paediatric Associations.
She was a wonderful friend and consultant colleague and along with Bill provided generous and much appreciated mentorship and support to junior colleagues.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and all your family
May she rest in peace
Penny and family, sincere sympathy at the passing of your dear mother.
Dr Pauline O’Connell was a grand pediatrician and a great lady. She was part of the soul of the IAPS. Having midwifed the society and foundation, she continued its growth and development through her historical perspective, regaling us with storytelling that reflected her deep values and experience of life. She brought her perspective to Boston Children’s where she did a fellowship with Dr Mary Ellen Avery. As an alum of Children’s, I could appreciate how her sharp mind quickly perceived the core of our shared profession of pediatrics. Whether we were analyzing the emerging recognition of the psychosocial determinants of health at luncheon at the Royal Society or sharing her love of her family and profession, now 4 generations of O’Connell physicians, at her Mount Merrion home or sharing about our beloved favorite movie , The Secret of Roan Inis , on IAPS bus rides around Ireland, Pauline was the quintessential wise woman, astute physician, grand lady and deep soul.

Our only consolation at her loss is that her spirit lives on at the Irish and American Pediaetric Society

With the greatest respect for a grand clinician
Mariette Murphy, M.D. M.P.H.
President
Irish and American Pediatric Society
The Daly, Dempsey, and Harahan families send their loving and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Pauline. She was a remarkable woman.

Our association goes back to the early 1950s when Pauline and Bill were on fellowships in Boston. They studied under our Aunt Kathleen Daly at City Hospital’s Mallory Institute of Pathology.

Whenever Pauline and Bill were in Boston we enjoyed gatherings at Bowditch Road or by the ocean at Green Hill or at a restaurant table presided over by Bill. Pauline, with her instinct and ability to make everyone feel special, was central to those parties as was Bill, with his stories and infectious laugh and inclusive spirit. When we visited Ireland we were welcomed, wined, and dined in that wonderful O’Connell way. Pauline – she of the twinkling eyes, the warm smile, the can-do attitude, and the strong opinions – was a delight.

Even as the ranks of the older generation thinned, Pauline continued the connections.

And, all the while, Pauline kept up with and led an impressive number of endeavors in medicine and education and anything to do with and for children.
Our sympathies to Kate and family on the death of your Mother. May just she rest in peace.
Sincere sympathy to all of the O Connell family on the passing of Pauline, a lovely lady.
