To Cliona, Derbhile, Sinead, Felim, Seamus, Mrs Donnelly and all the extended Donnelly family. Sincere condolences on the passing of your father. He was such a central figure in the medical world in Galway for so long and very dedicated to his patients and his students. He was a doctor in the traditional style who believed in having great clinical skills and professionalism, something he passed on to his students and junior doctors. He leaves a great legacy in the medical world. I'm sure you will miss his presence greatly. May he rest in Peace.

He was a wonderful man and doctor. I was a patient of his for many years and travelled from Limerick to him. He was a thorough gentleman with a wealth of knowledge and always spoke with such pride about you all.
He was kind and gentle and always had a twinkle in his eye and a huge smile when he met you.

My first encounter with Dr. Donnelly was when I graduated from UCD medical school at age 22 and got my first position of medical internship in Unit 3 Merlin Park 1975.The training was very much patient focused with 3 hour ward rounds where I learnt everything from mechanics to latest radioimmunoassay tests. History taking was emphasised and only our team could look after our patients on call,..Dr Donnelly always got what was best for his patients..
We met a few decades later in the Irish Catholic Doctors Guild (now the Irish Catholic Doctors Association) when Dr Donnelly proposed a prolife motion for the IMO AGM and it was carried ..

May i offer my deepest sympathy on the passing of a great man, a life worth living. He looked after me in Unit 3 Merlin Park in the 1980's. I was a puzzle to him at the time but he did'nt give up until he solved my problems and got me back on the road again. It is a shame the best have to go leaving this earth a poorer place.

Dear Seamus and family so sorry to learn of Dr Donnelly’s death. He was an outstanding clinician. My late father referred many grateful patients to him and he instilled in me an abiding regard for comprehensive history taking and physical examination. To this day his emphasis on a patient’s social as well as medical history is relayed to trainees. The former is often full of serendipitous findings that materially influence optimal patient care. He was ever courteous in his demeanour with an especial love of native Irish speaking patients. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann … i decus, i, nostrum; melioribus utere fatis … a faithful servant has undoubtedly been rewarded.

So sorry to hear the sad news and condolences to all the family . May the memories of happy times together help ye through these days . May he rest in peace .
