My sincere sympathies to the Ryan families. Pierce was a proud Taghmon man and a member of the distinguished Ryan family of Tomcoole and Old Boley who played such an important part in the struggle for Independence and the formation of the state. A nephew of the late Dr Jim Ryan a long serving government minister and Also Sean TO’Kelly the former President of Ireland
The family were fluent Irish speakers and devoted to the Nationalist cause. A consummate professional -Pierce rose above politics and never let it influence his work in an Foras Taluntais and Teagasc .Ascending to the top in both organizations.
All the Ryan family were absolute ladies and gentlemen and people of the highest integrity who served their country well.
His feats on the football field with St Peters College and with his native St Munns was legendary.

To Mrs Ryan, Christina, Suzy and the extended Ryan family, I am very sorry to hear about the passing of Dr Pierce, may he rest in peace. So many of us were enriched by his knowledge, wisdom and guidance. He made an enormous contribution to the agricultural research and advisory services in Ireland during his time in An Foras Talúntais and as the first Director of Teagasc. During my time at Oak Park I found Pierce to be a true gentleman as well as being a kind and caring leader. Thinking of you all at this sad and difficult time. Leaba i measc na naomh go raibh aige .

Comhbhrón ó chroí libh.
Sincere sympathy to the Ryan family on your sad loss . Pierce was a true gentleman
From the first to the last day of knowing Dr Ryan, he was for me the epitome of both gentleman and scholar. He was a man of cultivation and consideration; a man of dignity and decorum; a man of poise and polish. He was all this and more. He cut a tall and imposing figure and had that innate ability to turn heads when he entered the room. He oozed gravitas and class. Yet he was also gentle and kind, always warm and welcoming. To borrow from Kipling, he had that rare gift to be able to walk with Kings, but the Wexford in him, meant he never lost the common touch.
In possession of a brilliant intellect and enquiring mind, he nevertheless was a great listener. More often than not he was the smartest person in the room but wisely would say the least of anyone. But his words spoke volumes as does the memories he leaves behind.
For all your wise counsel, friendship and guidance, go raibh míle, míle maith agat Pierce.
Ní fheicimid a leitheid arís.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
