Dr. Sarah Mitchell

My sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Sarah. As can be seen from the many remembrances in this book, Sarah will be greatly missed across her personal and professional circles.

I was fortunate to be Sarah's postdoc co-supervisor, during her time at UBC. Sarah was a joy to work with, and brought inquisitiveness, talent, and enthusiasm to our research group on fractures. I especially remember Sarah's help as we worked together to herd a crowd of mathematicians and rock physicists to a workshop on Gabriola Island - no small feat! Besides our collaboration at UBC, it was great fun to connect with her again during a visit to MACSI and Limerick in 2009, where it was clear she was already bringing impactful contributions to the program. In 2019, we had the chance to reconnect again at a workshop in Bath, where I could again learn of Sarah's impressive work during the intervening years.

One of my favorite thoughts during times of passing is "May her memory be a blessing." Indeed, Sarah's memory is a blessing, and though she has been taken from us too soon, her memory is complemented by her many positive and generous accomplishments throughout her life.

I was very sorry to hear about the death of Sarah. I have fond memories of her ceramic work when she exhibited with our Limerick Ceramics group. May she rest in peace. Condolences to her family and friends.

We are so sorry for the loss of Sarah, which has come far too soon. She was such a lovely person with friends who treasured her both far and wide. When we last meet, she was telling me how friends travelled from Canada and Spain to recently catch up with her, a true testament to how much she was loved by people. She also loved her family dearly, her mom, dad (RIP), brothers, nephews, nieces and cousins. She was so proud of her dad getting his OBE and the pictures showed a great day celebrating the occasion.
Her kind spirit never faded throughout her fight, and it was inspiring! Ricky always says how generous she was with her time in work, really trying to help students excel academically. But she was also such a talented, artistic person, and I am sure that you will treasure some of those pieces for times ahead and I know we will always think of her when we take out the Christmas patchwork decoration that she made for us!
We will truly miss our friendship that has bloomed over wine and crisp catchups! May she rest in peace, Niamh and Ricky xxx

I am sad to hear that Sarah has passed away. To Sarah's family I am so sorry for your loss. I met Sarah through Tim and Marleen in Barcelona. We had a drink in Dublin, where I live, maybe two years ago. We had a lovely evening and a great catch up. She was very pleased to have become an Irish citizen. Thinking of you.

It with great sadness that I send my condolences to Sarah's family, friends and colleagues. Because of Sarah I met many lovely people and we had many nice and happy times, both at work and play. She made my life much better for all she was. I will always be grateful for knowing her and miss her terribly.

I met Sarah at Bath University in 1995 where we had some fun adventures through the hot air ballooning club. After university, we both moved abroad and I enjoyed catching up with her in various cities and countries.
Sarah was a brilliant and caring friend, and I will miss her greatly.

I am so saddened to hear of Sarah's passing. I was lucky enough to have Sarah as my undergraduate supervisor at UL. She was incredibly kind and generous with her time, and really inspired me to continue with maths research. Sarah was a great lecturer, and was always so friendly and happy to help students with anything they needed. I have learned so much from her during my undergraduate in UL, both from her lectures, and having the
privilege of doing a research project with her one summer. She will be missed.

I had Dr. Mitchell as a lecturer during my undergraduate in UL, she was a fantastic lecturer, so passionate about her teaching and her students. My condolences to her family and friends.

We in MTU Department Mathematics are very sorry to hear of the passing of Sarah, long before her time. Personally, I recall her in the roll-out of the Professional Diploma in Maths for Teaching back in 2012, leading out on the delivery of the very first module. So many students, those 'teacher-students' included, have benefitted from Sarah's knowledge and love of Mathematics. I later met her through Athena SWAN; again she was playing her part in something new that is now established and has made a difference.

Our condolences to all who mourn Sarah - her family and friends, and of course, her colleagues in UL, who we are holding in our thoughts and prayers.

I'm deeply sorry to hear about Sarah's untimely passing. As my PhD supervisor, she had an immense impact on my academic journey, and I owe her so much for that. Sarah was incredibly generous with her time and always made me feel welcome in her office. Her warmth and dedication extended beyond her professional life; she often spoke fondly of her nieces and nephews, and it was clear how much she adored them. Her passing is truly heart-breaking and my thoughts are with her family and loved ones.

Very sorry to hear about this sad loss. The Irish Mathematics community is poorer for it. I remember Sarah for her visits to UCD - her seminars on the Stefan problem, and the assistance she gave to the Maths Department in UCD over the years. Ar dheis lámh Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.

It is with great sadness that I learned of the soon departure of Sarah. I spent 5 years in Limerick as a PhD student of Macsi from 2006 and 2011 so I had the pleasure to share many moments with her that I will not forget. My favorite one being our time in Crete for a Conference, going down the Samarian gorge and enjoying some nice evening drinks with some Greek dances. My thoughts are with you all.

My sincere condolences to Sarah's family. Five years of suffering are finally over. The way Sarah carried this burden was truly remarkable.
