We were so sorry to hear of Dr Longs passing .what a lovely man he was ..brilliant Doctor..always so so kind to everyone. He took me under his wing after a lot of tragedies..and we got our longed for baby .thanks to him for seeking specialised help for us... He never forgot us either always asking about our family when we would meet him..Rest In Peace Dr Long.you were a very special man...

God rest his soul he brought me safely into this world March 1974. Always herard my mother rip talk about him. He saved my life in 1994 I had suffered an etoptic pregnancy looked after me so well. Always remember him its amazing to think I was under his care and he had delivered me 20 yrs prior. Rest in heavenly peace

I knew him as a student, a junior doctor, a colleague and particularly as a friend and was privileged to be included in his Saturday morning coffee gatherings where everything was discussed and Steve’s standard answer to a question was ‘it’s not rightly known’
My apologies that I couldn’t attend his obsequies as I am out of the country. He will be sorely missed

I remember Dr. Long, as an excellent *tutor, when I was a medical student, in the 1990s. He was also, a good 'role model', and example. For the students and colleagues, who encountered him.
Based on the comments/condolences, left by others, he was *beloved by many, across time and space. A gentle, kind, and wise man. But also, a 'tough cookie', where the need arose. (I strongly suspect...)
As noted by Damien, at his funeral, the following condolence/comment, speaks volumes:
"Kind and caring doctor to all in need rest in peace" - A nurse.
I *suspect, that he put his patients at ease, on all fronts...

Stephen was much loved and appreciated here in Killarney.He will be sorely missed. My heartfelt sympathy to you!

Sincere sympathy to all the Long family on the death of your dear dad Stephen. Condolences also to his grandchildren who will also miss him greatly. Dr Long was a very kind and caring doctor who treated everyone with respect. He educated both medical students,doctors and midwifery students with his vast knowledge. May his kind and gentle soul rest in peace after a life well lived in the service of others. We have a lovely picture of him hanging on the wall in the Gynae Theatre where he worked for many years.

I was very sorry to hear of the passing of Dr Long. I worked for him in the 1990s and remember him with great fondness. Beneath his sardonic sense of humour was a deep respect for his patients, and a genuine curiosity about, and kindness towards those who worked with him, including students. He wanted the best for people and had a great supply of stories. I remember the day he asked me to drive his car back to Galway from a clinic in Roscommon, and I still have the Cross pen he gave me at the end of my six-month stint. I'm sure he leaves behind very good memories for many people including his family. My sincere condolences to them. May he rest in peace.

We were saddened to learn of Stephen’s death. Apart from his exemplary care and attention in delivering our children, his firm roots in Limerick’s hurling stock ensured that we never lacked for chat down the decades. A joy that in his twilight years he saw the green and white flying high.

So sorry to hear of your loss of your Dad. He was well loved, as a mentor to young docs, as we made our way thru medical school and then SHO-ships - at a time I must add when such relationships with consultants were rare. Kind, helpful, a fair steward, greatly admired by myself and so many others. Those skilful hurler’s hands continued on their magic in the Limerick green scrubs of team RHG/GUH. It was always so nice to bump into his welcoming & smiling face on the streets of Salthill etc

I met Dr. Long on my very first visit to UHG in 1991, I was a public patient and I remember being almost disappointed if I didn't get to see him every visit thereafter. He made us all feel welcome and a great bond of trust was formed.
