Sorry for yer loss Thoughts
One of our greatest musicians - a national treasure, especially to those who had the great fortune to have known him. A true gentleman of our times whom we will always remember. Special condolences to Mavis, Derek and all his family.
The Shelbourne days were my fondest memories because when I started there with Earl (pre Hoedowners) I was just a three chord trick guitarist (with maybe a good feel for music) who could sing pop songs and entertain the punters. When I left the Hoedowners I had experience, some music reading skills and a love of jazz - mostly due to the encouragement of Earl.
I gained more experience watching and working with Earl than anyone else. He was kind, generous with his time, funny and, of course, a great player.
In later years when I became musical-director for singer Tony Christie we returned to Ireland relatively often and I always contacted Earl - the last time when he led the orchestra for the BASCA songwriting competition in Cavan. I was lucky enough to write the winning song that year and no-one was more pleased than Mr Gill.
I owe him a lot - may he rest in Peace.
