Eddie Olden

I am so very sorry to hear of Eddie's passing.

He was a lovely, smiley, friendly man who I knew to chat to from the times i visited my Aunt Marion in the same Nursing Home.

I asked about Eddie a few weeks ago as hadn't seen him and the nurses told me had passed. I used to work with his son-in-law, Paul.

Over the years Christmas never passed without himself and Margot coming to the station armed with chocolates or biscuits and always two smiling faces and a few kindly remarks from Eddie. May both Eddie and Margot enjoy the light of heaven together. RIP.

Deepest sympathy to the Olden family on both Eddie's passing and that of Margot (I didn't know she had passed away last year). Eddie attended a part-time German course that I taught in Tipperary Institute (now TUS) many years ago but I can still remember the difference he made in that classroom. He was a natural linguist and there was such vibrancy in how he tackled his language tasks in German. He epitomised lifelong learning. Eddie invited me to lunch in Cabra Road one day so that I could meet his beloved Margot. They were a lovely team and gave me such a warm welcome. We had chats too about the sugar factory in Tuam (where my own father had worked) which was a big part of Eddie's working life before moving to Thurles. My thoughts are with your family on the loss of both your parents within a short space of time.

I dont think I have a single memory of Eddie where he wasn't smiling. Always so kind and welcoming, even if it was the umpteenth time that day we were arriving over unannounced to the house.

I have one particularly vivid memory of Eddie: sitting in the sitting room, handing me a sweet, with a big smile on his face! Yup, being handed chocolates with a joy-filled and tender smile as a kid — you don't forget it, even after this long.

Deepest condolences to the Olden family on the death of Eddie. He and my Dad (also Michael) were great friends from their time in the Sugar Factory. Dad held Eddie in great esteem and they had some great times in the Factory and also post-retirement.

I also want to express our appreciation for the lovely letter that we received on Dad's death.
