It was with great Sadness that I learned today of the Death of a Gentleman Eamonn Rafter who i had the Privilege of Serving on a Committee with , his Experience Kindness and Compassion was always to the Fore and a Guiding light to us when Making a Decision.

What a wondeful send off 'The Great Edmundo Ros' (nickname from his best friend of over 60 years Billy Aird of Portlaoise) received from all the Phelan family of Durrow. Eamonn was such a true gentleman and one always came away from his company feeling the better for the great banter that was shared. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.

I remember as a small boy sitting enthralled on Paddy Lalor's sitting room floor after an Election Campaign as Eamonn, in full voice with his elbow resting on the piano, captivated the house with his beautiful rendition of the old classic, Jerusalem. Many years later as the life of one of nature's gentlemen moved to its later stages, it was our privilege that my young daughters Katie and Johanna could visit him in Knockanoran, Abbeyleix Hospital and Crosspatrick Nursing Home to join him for some music and song.
May Eamonn rest in everlasting peace.

Our sincere condolence to the Phelan family on the death of their uncle Eamonn. He had a great career in politics and was a great family man. Eamonn and his wife Dolly stepped up when his sister Mrs Phelans husband Jimmy past away. They nurtured and guided his nephews and niece's throughout their lives. Eamonn is now gone to meet his maker and his beloved Dolly, sister Peg, brother Sean and nephews John and Joe.

I am very saddened to hear of Eamonn's passing. Eamonn was a long-serving and much valued member of the Fianna Fáil Ard Chomhairle and a distinguished county councillor. He represented his community with great dedication and commitment. Eamonn was passionate about, and made a significant contribution to, his community and county and its development. I also acknowledge his service to Fianna Fáil over many years and offer my condolences, and those of all at Fianna Fáil Headquarters, to his family and friends. RIP.
