Edwin Michael O'Shea

Yesterday I met Martina and asked for Edwin.
She told me the shocking news that he had recently passed away and I just want to express my sympathy to all his loved ones.
I did not see Edwin since he was six years old.I I was his Senior Infants teacher in St.Marks,The Glen.
He entertained me every day!
He had a very engaging personality and he was so bright. There was a permanent smile on his angelic face. He had a glint in his eye and such an enquiring mind. I was not surprised when he went on to study "hard sums!". He exuded the confidence of a child who was loved and treasued.
It was obvious he would "go far" Over the years I met Martina and I heard about his academic success and life in America.
I remember him so well .Having met many "gems "during forty years in the classroom Edward was one of the rare"jewels". May he rest in peace.

My deepest condolence to Martina, Ger, Jennifer & all of Edwin’s family. I was very saddened to hear of Edwin’s passing. In 1995 I met Edwin standing in the corridor in UCC before our mutual mathematics lectures. Of all the people I met during my college years Edwin stands out as a great and wise friend. He took me under his wing and many a home cooked dinner I had with his mam Martina up on the north side. He will always be remembered by me as a dear friend and I was privileged to have met and been a part of his life way back then. One of the quotes he told me that sticks with me to this day is “Attitude is the paintbrush of the mind” Thank you for the memories and for making my college experience so special - love from here to infinity my friend x

I'm very saddened and shocked to read that Edwin has passed away. I knew him in UCC back in the mid-late 1990s through some classmates and just have to echo all that has been said about him here. He was a really genuinely sound fellow and great company - on the few occasions I met him, it was always a pleasure to speak with him.
The last time I saw him, had a chat with him on Oliver Plunket St before I left Cork over 20 years ago and hadn't seen him since but am not at all surprised to read how successful he was or that he followed through on his passion for mathematics and education throughout his short and accomplished life. What a great quote from him on the proofs!
This is very sad news and I'm very sorry to read it. Sincerest condolences to his wife Virginia and their family, his parents and relatives. RIP Edwin.

I was in Edwin's class for our undergraduate degree in UCC back in the latter 90's and while I had lost contact with him since we all graduated and went out separate ways, I always enquired about him amongst our fellow college friends, every time we connected.
You could see very early on in our degree course, his grá for mathematics was huge. He lived and breathed maths and it was no great surprise to see him follow the academic path and became a very successful scholar in his field.
He was always a ray of happiness every day in college and I have very fond memories of being in his company every single time. He was without doubt one of life's remaining gentlemen. Words fail me at this very sad news but can I compliment the person who penned such a beautiful note about his life. Sadly it's always the nice ones that are taken from us prematurely.
Rest in peace Edwin and please God our paths will cross again down the line.

I am completely shocked and saddened to hear of Edwin's passing.

I studied with Edwin in UCC back in the late 1990s. Though our class was small in number, Edwin filled it with warmth, great questions, an appetite for learning, witty & humorous comments and a sprinkling of mischief & fun. I'm glad to see his love of Mathematics never waivered and the smile & glint in his eye, which was a joy to be greeted with on a daily basis, never left him.

My God, Martina, Ger & Jennifer, I just learned of Edwin’s death. I am absolutely heartbroken over you. I am so so sorry for your unimaginable, immense loss. I just read about it now!!! I am so sorry also to his wife Virginia, his beautiful children, Emmy and Frank. What a beautiful excerpt I just read of his wonderful Life. I’ve never seen or read anything like it. I can’t tell you again of how shocked and sorry myself and Billy are. We’re just just heartbroken over you. I’m so sorry my beautiful friend.

I was a student with Edwin during our years at UCC and later worked with him for a year also at UCC. I'm so very sorry to hear of his passing and express deepest sympathy to his loved ones. Edwin loved his mathematics so much. I'll remember him brightly in the context of the 'good ol days' in the School of Math Sciences at UCC. Edwin's presence and impact will always endure.

Edwin was such a ball of energy the room always lit up… we were in the same class in college and without him I wouldn’t have had such a great time! He loved maths so much that I remember he even did a mathemagical mystery tour that ended up in the cinema watching Good Will Hunting… only Edwin would think of that! He’ll be missed by lots of people that he touched over the years.

So, so sorry to hear of your tragic loss Ger and Martina. I can picture so clearly Edwin running around in the sandy field in Allihies all those years ago, and a gorgeous child he was. You must be so proud of him, and all he achieved in his short life. Thinking of you at this sad time.

He was clearly developing a very successful academic career in the US.

My sincerest condolences to all of Edwin's family and friends. I knew Edwin from our time in UCC together. We first got to know each other well over the course of a weekend competing in a mathematical modelling contest and remained good friends after that. Edwin was as sound a fella as you could hope to meet and had a great enthusiasm for so many things that you would always come away from a conversation with him feeling better about the world. Such a sad loss.

So so sad to hear of Edwin's passing. We were in UCC in the late 90s. Although we had very different academic interests, this didn't matter one iota: everyone, and I mean *everyone* knew Edwin. More than that, not only did everyone know him, everyone loved him. Just a lovely, lovely human being of the kind that any person is blessed to have met in their lifetime. Every one of us is better for having had the pleasure of spending time with him. Condolences to his family and friends - please know that his spirit inspires and endures.
