Unfortunately I cannot be at the funeral. But myself, Ian Hughes, Morgan Hughes and Marie Hughes MacCabe had recent happy family meals with our lovely Aunt Eileen. She had cared for us as babies before her marriage. And 50 years later could remember my skin burned easily. such was her enduring concern and interest.

With love, respect and thanks I remember a wonderful kind aunt and a strong elegant woman .Women like her made the Ireland of today. Eileen was incredibly thoughtful, generous, discrete, loyal and supportive. This was so evident when my father died leaving a widow and five young children to look after. Eileen was a constant reassuring presence in our young lives to me age 4, my brothers and sisters and her widowed sister Mary Hughes, nee Hutch of Cork. Her cakes were beautiful creations and frankly she was the best baker in Ireland! And she gave us the most incredible presents. A harmonica , a kite which we all five loved so much. And the best book ever "Watership Down" when I had measles. A story about a family of rabbits. All perfect thoughtful presents for children growing up in the countryside and living on a high hill. Her love and pride in Sarah and all her family was very special and endearing to see. I will always remember the adorable way she would look over her shoulder when leaving and give a special happy smile just for you. Her lovely presence and kindness lives on in Sarah and family.

With sadness and love I say "Goodbye" to a real treasure.
