To Alan, Lorcan & Brendan and all the Balfe family we wish to express our condolences to all the generations of the Balfe family on the death of your beloved mother Eithne , she was a most wonderful women and it doesn't seem so long ago when I was chatting with my brother Jack outside 17 Oakdown Road and she was on her afternoon walk to the Good Shepherd to pray for everyone and her beloved Andrew whose she is now reunited with in the heavens , May they all rest in eternal glory and peace.

Mrs Balfe was always a great supporter of the College, her sons Alan, Lorcan, Conor, Niall and Brendan and Grandsons Fergus and Diarmaid all distinguished Past Pupils of the College, Lorcan also being a former Principal. A great DLSC lineage.

Eithne and her husband, Andrew, were part of a cadre of young couples who were the founding mothers and fathers of the modern-day Churchtown, when, in the 1950s, butter-cupped, pasture fields were disturbed by earth-moving equipment, in order to house the civil servants, teachers and bank officials setting out on the great adventure of married life.

Though old and frail they eventually would become, their presence among us continued to be reassuring, as they were, as Eithne was, the pillars that subtly kept the temple of our community upright, while the rest of us enthusiastically pursued the fruits of the temporal world. We mourn their passing, and gratefully and humbly have taken the baton of responsibility from them.

At a personal level, I had the good fortune to live along the route Eithne took every afternoon, on foot, making her way to say a prayer in her beloved sanctuary, the Church of the Good Shepherd. It was a joy for me every time we happened to bump into each other, her kindness, goodness and cheerfulness radiating discreetly from her.

I occasionally couldn’t resist briefly placing an affectionate and protective masculine arm across her feminine shoulders. Eithne’s kindness to my mother, in 1998, as she lay in the anteroom to the next life, is something I’ve not forgotten.
