Eleanor Malone

So sorry to hear of the passing of Eleanor. I met her through John Gibson and she was a lovely, warm woman and always a pleasure to bump into at concerts and around Cork city

My deepest condolences to Malachy and all of Eleanor's family and friends. I was lucky enough to study piano with Eleanor for a few short months, but she had an enormous impact on my life. Her kindness and sense of humour were second to none. An absolute lady, who will be greatly missed by so many. Rest in peace, Eleanor.

Dear Malachy - we were so saddened to hear of the recent passing of dear Eleanor. Remembering our bumping into you both on the ferry from Cork to Santander in 2018 and because of Eleanor's friendliness and engaging personality, we exchanged numbers and arranged to meet again somewhere on our way back to the Ferry in Santander. We ended up in Santilana del Mar and spent a few lovely evenings with you both - a time we are now remembering with great fondness. Our sincere condolences - thinking of you at this really difficult time.

Such sad news here that Eleanor has died. It’s been many years since I met her but she was always a person I loved to hear about and remember so fondly. She had the misfortune of inheriting me as a pupil when Bridget Doolin retired and at a time when my dedication to piano was waning yet she was infinitely patient and I loved the lessons with her and the chats. She was a really special person and I feel lucky to have had her as a teacher. She will be so missed.

Eleanor was not only a fantastic pianist and musician, but an effective and passionate teacher. Her legacy lives on in those she taught, whether working in music or in other areas. More than that, Eleanor wore her greatness lightly and was just such a kind person. I will miss bumping into her, whether in CSM, the Corner House or around Ballinlough.

Malachy, John, Frank, Deirdre and all of Eleanor's family and friends, I would like offer my sincere condolences on the sad and untimely passing of Eleanor. My first encounter with Eleanor was as a 14 year old piano student. She was an amazing teacher in every way, kind, generous, encouraging and such fun. As a mature B Mus student she was invaluable as a mentor. She was so supportive, caring and understanding and became a wonderful friend.
Eleanor was profoundly talented both as a performer and teacher and she had the ability to bring out the best in her students. For me it was her modesty, emotional intelligent and her ability to make people feel at ease that I will remember most.
Eleanor became a great friend of mine and someone that I feel privileged to have known. May Eleanor now rest in peace.

A truly inspiring teacher and musician.

I first encountered Eleanor as a young pianist when she examined me during my County Cork School of Music exams. She was most encouraging and kind, and she still remembered me when I joined the BMus at the CSM. I then had the privilege of having her as a chamber music coach, which was only elevated by her own experience as a viola player. After graduating, we continued to bump into her in Cork at concerts and even at weddings, and I know she had a profound impact on many of my peers. She was also an accompanist for Kinsale Opera when I was growing up, and my mum has such fond memories of her too. My condolences to her family, friends and colleagues. May she rest in peace.

Eleanor was an exceptional solo pianist, accompanist well as a collaborator in chamber music groups.

My sincere condolences to Malachy and the Malone family. As a member of the St. Lukes male voice choir I got the chance to sing in the city hall. Under the guidance of Eleanor and Mary Hegarty , it seemed easy. Of course it was the professionalism of both ladies which was the key. Later in the night Eleanor complemented us. What a lady. Rest in peace Eleanor.

What a privilege I had to get to know Eleanor and Malachy during my music studies. Eleanor has been my chamber music teacher for a few months, my landlady during three years and so much more than that ! She was so welcoming, caring and loving towards us, foreign students, in addition to be a brilliant musician and teacher.
Malachy and Eleanor were always inviting my family and partner when they were visiting to wonderful dinners at their home. They took us around to visit the country and listen to their musician friends. And then when I went back to France, they visited us regularly with their campervan, they hosted us also when we came to Ireland. When my son was born, Eleanor was the kindest and sweetest person towards him and his cousin.
What good and hilarious times we have spent together.
The terrible news felt surreal.

I first heard her play Debussy’s “La Cathedral engloutie” at a Feis Maitiu final c. 1975 and was an admirer of her gifted musicianship thereafter - particularly her exquisite, beautifully balanced chamber music performances.

We will miss Eleanor a lot, she was so full of attentions towards others, so generous and cheerful...
We think our daughter Anne was very lucky to meet her and Malachy when staying in Ireland for her studies.
The lovely time spent together will remain in our hearts...

My deepest condolences to Malachy and the Malone family on Eleanor’s passing.
Eleanor was my teacher but she was so much more than that. She was a role model, a mentor and a friend. She brought the best out in her students and she made the musical journey a joy. She had a unique way of motivating us and encouraging us to believe in ourselves. Pushing through those pain points with practice and discipline was easier with Eleanor at the helm. Feeling her sense of pride meant a lot.
I started piano lessons with her at 6 years old and I never remember a time when my opinion didn’t count. She was a great listener and so very patient.
Over the years we chatted, we laughed, we sometimes put the world to rights. She was a confidante and a friend and I missed my dedicated weekly time with her when it eventually came to an end.
I have often told my own children what an inspiration she was to me, as a musician and as a person, and how I never remember wanting to skip a lesson, whether I had practiced or not! How blessed we were to have had Eleanor in our lives.

Deepest condolences to Malachy and to Eleanor’s family and wide circle of friends and colleagues at this very sad time. She was a warm, kind and vibrant person who will be so deeply missed.
