Eleanor was a true lady — tall, elegant, and always with that radiant smile. But more than anything, it was when she spoke that you really felt her kindness and warmth. She had such a calm, steady way about her and was always so easy and pleasant to be around.

Years ago, she and my late mother did a cheese-making course together. I’m not sure how much cheese got made, but I do know my mother enjoyed Eleanor’s company more than anything else. Their chats and laughs from that time stayed with her long after the course ended. After Mam passed, that lovely connection passed on to my father. He used to delight in announcing that he was off to collect Paddy Holland and the two of them were heading to Eleanor’s for tea. They’d sit and reminisce, and Paddy would leave more worried about guarding Eleanor’s apple tart than getting back into the jeep safely! That was Eleanor — gracious, welcoming, and endlessly generous.

I’d like to think that St. Peter has the oil tank filled, and that Eleanor is back beside her beloved Aga, baking away in a warm kitchen in the sky.
