Dearest Nanny and Grandad,
I’m so very sorry for your loss. Aunty Lena had a special presence in all our lives growing up and I’m very grateful to have such fond memories. From her love of gardening, to her bird watching, to her loyal companions, Lassie and Prince, and to her joy for sports and rivalry roaring on Waterford in the hurling!
I especially loved the stories Aunty Lena told of moving to London as a young girl and the life she built there, from working on the buses to the people she met.
I think about those stories often as I try and build my own life here in New York City. I loved to send her home a postcard with an update.
I’m very sorry I can’t be with you all this week, but I’m thinking of everyone and keeping you and Aunty Lena in my thoughts and prayers.

And after I retired John and myself called weekly with The Avondhu and with any local news that we may have. She was a lovely lady and may her gentle soul Rip with her beloved John who she spoke so often and lovingly about
