Auntie Betty, always with a twinkle in her eye and always in great form, quick to laugh and to see the humor in life.
One story Betty told me that still makes me laugh was as we drove through Clare one afternoon on a brisk day in Spring with my Dad and Mum (Betty’s sister Maureen). I was visiting from the U.S. and was nostalgic for a trip through Clare after many Summers there as a child. Mum, Dad and Betty were up for it and off we went.
We stopped in Lahinch for lunch, drove on towards Lisdoonvarna and then came upon a community hall in the middle of nowhere in the afternoon with the windows all steamed up. Betty said it was for sure a Farmer’s dance, men looking for potential wives. They pulled up the car and were daring me to go in, much merriment ensued as they tried to persuade me. Betty then reminisced about how she and a friend had gone to a similar dance back in their youth to see what it was all about. In they went and soon after, Betty was approached by a man whose opening line, in a deep and serious voice was, “Would you like to step into the shadows Miss?” That was how Betty told it and she burst out laughing at the punchline. Always great fun with Betty and always a joy to be around. Rest in peace Betty.

Dermot, Jim and Fr Colm, I was saddened to learn of Betty’s passing. I have fond memories of Sunday evenings in Shelbourne Road in the late 50’s and early 60’s and before television, staring at our “Black Box” gramophone player, listening to Betty on vinyl at 33 1/3 RPM, singing The Dear Little Shamrock and other melodies.
