There is no one I loved being in a room with more than Emer. She brought such warmth and wit with her everywhere she went. Often she would surprise us by showing up at an event in Maynooth, and I just knew the day was about to be a million times better. The moments we spent chatting, debating and discussing are forever cherished, but it was the moments of laughter that stay with me. Whether we were in a 3 hour seminar or swimming or anywhere, there was always so much laughter with Emer. I am so grateful I got to share this PhD journey with her, and discuss, debate and laugh along the way.

We are all heartbroken to lose Emer and just can’t imagine school life without her and her lovely smile.

Emer was incredibly kind, generous, respectful and thoughtful. She had a great sense of humour, was such a warm person and was so approachable and easy to talk to.
She loved her job and was so passionate and knowledgeable about education. She really cared about our school and has left such a massive mark on the staff, children and families of our school community.

I have such fond memories of Emer - our Erasmus trips that she organised so well & all the laughs and chats we had, late night walking home and chatting on a mystery tour in Luxembourg, swapping cars years ago so she could try my Peugeot and I could try her fiat 500!!, offering me bags of fancy dress goodies to bring home to my kids from a party she had attended - just because she was so thoughtful..

She was so proud of her boys and often talked about them and Seán in the staff room.

I loved being in Emer’s company. Her insightful take on things always brought deeper meaning to our conversations. Her genuine curiosity for others made us all feel heard & valued. I was so privileged to get to know Emer over past 3 years of the PhD in Maynooth. Our group will never be the same in the absence of your warm presence, but we will continue to write, knowing that you are with us and we are forever changed by your wisdom & friendship.

I was lucky enough to meet Emer in Göttingen last summer and I thought she was so kind and lovely. I remember telling Emer about my PhD project as we introduced ourselves and she became like a hype woman for me and my work ever since. We’d meet new people throughout our week and Emer would always nudge them to ask me about my PhD project as she thought it was so brilliant. Academia can be a very daunting and unkind space, especially for early career and young women, so Emer’s kindness to me meant a lot. I always think fondly of the time Emer and I had together last summer, where we also went on long walks in the wood and had many conversations about languages, which is our shared special interest.

So shocked and saddened on hearing about Emer's passing.
I was a colleague many years ago in Carlow ETNS and Emer was such a kind person, easy to be around and incredibly knowledgeable.

Emer you were a truely kind and wonderful person . Always a smile on your face whenever i met you on the corridor and always asked how my day was going. You gave me great encouragement when i first started in school and told me always trust myself and the job i was doing. I will never forget your kindness towards me . To Emer’s family and friends, I am truly sorry for your loss. Emer was always so kind and inspiring to me.

I am extremely heartbroken to hear about the untimely demise. I met Emer in Germany around this time last year, and although we did not spend a lot of time together, she is still the kind of person who leaves an impact. Can't seem to get her kind and friendly face out of my mind. May her soul rest in peace, and wishing love and strength to her family.

I was shocked and saddened to hear about Emer's passing. It was really hard to take in since we just met a few weeks ago at the RCEN conference in Maynooth. Emer and I started in Colaiste Iosagain together and stuck together as the few pupils who came from English speaking national schools. We shared a room in France during a school trip and drank too much of the cheapest possible wine from boxes. After the Leaving, in 1988 a gang of us headed off to live on a campsite in Munich and make our fortunes. Emer was a source of great support in Munich as I'd just lost my father suddenly. Time spent with Emer was time well spent. She was always calm, witty and fun. It was a privilege to know her.

I was shocked to hear of the sudden passing of Emer. I will fondly remember her incredible ability to enforce a sense of calm on situations, while being non judgemental and kind at the same time.

Dear Sean, Colm and Finnbar, please accept my heartfelt condolences to you. I had the pleasure of co-supervising Emer’s PhD work at Maynooth University. She was a beautiful soul full of wit, insight and laughter. Emer affected everyone she met with her adventurous spirit and insatiable curiosity. She was a presence that brightened any room she was in. Emer’s spirit will continue to live on through the relationships that were so dear to her and her work. Be well.

Emer was an important member of our community in the Department of Education in Maynooth University. She had a positive impact on everyone she interacted with. Emer carried her keen intellect lightly and brought humour and creativity to her peers and lecturers in classes here in Maynooth University. As a PhD Student in Education, Emer used her research skills to do innovative work on relational pedagogy in Ireland. Her achievements in research are many, we would like to highlight a few, Emer qualified as a Restorative Practice trainer with CDI and co-authored a chapter on Restorative Practice for the All means All Handbook for Inclusive Education. She spoke at conferences in Ireland, the UK and Finland on relational pedagogy and has written a chapter for the upcoming Routledge Handbook on Relational Pedagogy.
Her loss will be felt by all who knew and worked with her here in Maynooth University. Our thoughts are with her family and friends and her students and colleagues in Carlow Education Together at this sad time.
