Emmet Stagg

On hearing of Emmet's death, Sam and I were looking back to those days of Labour Left, when we were most involved with Emmet. Now Sam too is gone. Condolences to Mary and to all your family, friends and comrades. I hope we all get through this time of grief.

I was so sorry to hear of Emmet's passing. We served together in the Dáil for many years but he was always very supportive of me. I always remember him telling me as a Cllr to stop waiting for Joe Costello to die and to find myself a constituency which made me laugh.
We were all a little afraid of him as young TDs as he was so revered and so senior but when you got to know him you were always impressed by how big his heart was. And he always had time for a chat and advice - especially about hand written notes!
I'm sorry I didn't reach out more when he was unwell. My own dad died last July so I know all too well how difficult these times are.
But please know that we loved him and he'll never be forgotten.

I met Emmet back in 2019 when I organised a meeting of town residents on a social and environmental issue. Emmet was very kind and attended the meeting and offered us some very sound advice.

It is a such a sad loss to the Labour Party and particularly to us here in Kildare North. Emmet always put others first and was a voice for those who had very little and was a champion for those without a voice. He was courageous and ferocious and you never had to second-guess Emmet’s view on a given topic. He had amazing energy and worked day and night on behalf of his constituents.
