May I offer my deepest condolences to Ray & family on the passing of Emmett to his eternal reward. We were colleagues in the telecommunications sector in Dublin when Emmett joined us in the Drawing office of the R & D Lab. in the early 1960's. Emmett's engineering drawings were a work of art. His annotating was uniquely gifted. His drawings immediately recognisable without looking for his signature. He was the all-American boy, crew cut, having the broadest smile, an impish grin. Full of good natured devilment with a heart of gold & a ring to match. He fitted in immediately like a hand in a well worn glove as was his style.
Perhaps I will bring a smile to your face Ray when I mention the dark green Glen Check suite that he had just purchased on the run up to your wedding. He came into work all dressed up & looking immaculate. My guess is that it was an important date for you both that evening. The last time I met Emmett by accident was in Eason's in Dublin back in the early 80's. He was returning from a trip abroad on the way home to Wexford. He was purchasing books & art supplies for the children. He was the same good natured Emmett, uniquely himself & matching smile. We just stood in the middle of a busy Eason's catching up. It was a privilege & an honour to have known Emmett.
May he rest in the Peace of the Lord.

Another good man gone and one that I am sure will be sorely missed. There was nothing I liked better than to travel to different parts of the world with Emmett, always good fun and even in difficult circumstances always with a smile on his face and never giving up or giving in.
Rest in peace my friend.
Sincere condolences to the O'Connell family, RIP Emmett.
Our deepest sympathy to Róisín and family. Emmett was a wonderful man.
Emmett O’Connell’s youthful background in the Irish community of the Bronx, New York, made him a strong Irish nationalist, and he supported all his life the cause of a united independent Irish Republic, and loved this country dearly. We first came to know him when he lectured to the Dublin Wolfe Tone Society in the 1960s. He later participated in the referendum on Ireland's Accession Treaty to the EEC in 1972, when he wrote a prescient pamphlet "The Consequences of Monetary Union and its effects on peripheral regions" criticising the idea of a European Monetary Union and a single EU currency, which was only a distant prospect then, for the actual euro-currency notes and coins did not start circulating until 2002. The occasional business and financial journalism that he contributed to several Irish newspapers in the years that followed was always of the highest order, informed as it was by his practical experience of business as well as his wide reading. Emmett was a truly great man and a great Irishman. He was one of those larger-than-life persons whom people remembered long after they had met him, exuding as he did a strong sense of vitality and affability, and being a fine expositor of the issues he believed in. Irish nationalists and Republicans will mourn his passing, and his example should encourage them to continue working for the causes he believed in. May we offer our sympathy to Emmett’s wife, Ray, and the children on their sad loss.
So sorry to hear about Mr. O’Connell’s passing. My thoughts and prayers go to his family and wife. The few times I met him, while I was living with Oisin and Karla, I thought to myself “what an interesting and full of knowledge man he is”. I’m sure he left a mark in his grandchildren and children and he will be remembered greatly.
So sorry to hear of Emmet’s death may he rest in peace

Sincere sympathy to Ray, Roisin, Robert and Oisin and the O'Connell family on the passing of Emmett. He was a formidable character in the business world, both in Ireland and internationally. He will be sadly missed by all his friends and supporters. I had the pleasure of knowing Emmett for over forty years. I have many wonderful memories shared with Emmett, exploring for gold and copper in the northern Nevada, having  dinner in the New York Athlete Club with Senator Hilary Clinton and Fr. Alec Reed, having lunch in St. Tropez on the French Riviera with Emmett, Atle Jebsen the Norwegian Shipping Magnate and Rory Brady the former Attorney General, and last but not least, his legendary cocktail receptions at 97 St. Stephens Green, with Charles Haughey and Brian Lenihan in attendance
