Eoin COLLINS

I have just learned of the death of Eoin Collins, and am sad and very shocked to hear of it. In my work on the Government Working Group on Domestic Partnerships with Eoin I will always remember him as someone very special, honest, quiet spoken but steely, determined to keep the focus on the principle of equality, and a gentle persuader, a great colleague.

I was honoured to be a friend of Eoin’s and to reconnect in recent times over long walks in Central Park and zooms with Anne and Sheelin. It is so true that one always felt better after a conversation with Eoin: the places he would take you with his great intelligence, his infectious curiosity, his wicked humour and his oh-so-generous spirit. May the knowledge of how deeply he is loved and esteemed by his very many friends bring you comfort in these and coming times.

Deepest sympathy to all the Collins family on the loss of dear Eoin. I had the honour to work and share an office with Eoin when I joined GLEN in 2006, from him I learned so much. He was generous in sharing his experience and wisdom. He championed the value of evidence based research as a tool to bring positive change, he wrote meticulously, he thought and felt deeply. He was quirky and funny. He talked a lot! He was warm and giving and thoughtful. His work on equality had an enormous and lasting impact, his steadfast and diplomatic persuasion as part of the Government’s Colley Group (2006) alone paved the way for access to marriage being opened to same-sex couples. He shared a vision that being LGBT would be unremarkable, that LGBT people could aspire to whatever they chose and were capable of doing. We’re a long way towards that vision, thanks to Eoin. I will be forever grateful for the enormous contribution Eoin has made to my life. Rest in Peace. X

Sincere condolences to the Collins family and to Eoin’s good friends and fellow activists here and in New York today. Along with Íde O’Carroll, the book Lesbian & Gay Visions of Ireland was a landmark moment in Irish LGBT+ Studies. His brilliance, empathy, and bold infectious wit are the things I remember best. Eoin’s stalwart support for feminist causes is worth noting here, alongside his important work for LGBT+ and other rights in Ireland. I’m very glad to have spent time with him and Josep in New York, they were the best of good company, wonderful human beings both. My deepest condolences to Eoin's family and friends at this time. As wonderful, kind, caring, intelligent and funny a person you could wish to know.

My deepest condolences to the immediate and extended families of Eoin and Josep on their tremendous losses. My path first crossed Eoin’s through work in the mid-2000s when he was at GLEN and after that we engaged in some joint advocacy work to improve immigration and citizenship rights for gay couples. He had enormous empathy & was held in such high regard by everyone. It was such a pleasure to work with him & we kept in touch after, often bumping into each other in our Dublin 8 neighbourhood before he moved to NYC. He always brought a smile & a laugh, and will be terribly missed by all who had the good fortune to meet and know him.

So sorry to hear about Eoin's passing, a wonderful human being whom I had the pleasure to work with in Nexus, unassuming and very rarely took credit for all he did to make Ireland a better society, in all walks of life. Sending my deepest condolences to Dolores & Eoin’s beloved family on such a tragic loss. My heart broke when I learnt of Eoin’s sad passing. I’d known him since the fondly remembered good old days in TCD, almost 40yrs ago!!! I left Dublin in1986 to work in London & Eoin followed that well trodden path sometime later & we became housemates in a not very salubrious house or neighbourhood but there were lots of fun times. I loved Eoin dearly and admired him greatly, his humour, his integrity, his honesty, his fierce intellect, his humility. He was a true friend & one of those rare individuals who if you’ve not met up for weeks, months or even years once you saw him it was like continuing a conversation you’d just started the day before. I knew if I ever needed help Eoin would be there for me. My daughter is equally as bereft as me as Eoin was like her personal guardian angel when she went to New York fairly unprepared in 2018.I spoke to Eoin & he met her at Port Authority and put her up, for over a week, took her round Central Park & to the Met & helped her plan the rest of her US trip. He & Josep,were wonderful hosts & she has many happy memories of that time. I was honoured to be Eoin’s friend and he will always have a special place in my heart. May he rest in peace back in the arms of his beloved Josep.

Eoin was one of those rare beings who was both brilliant and with a wicket sense of fun. Those of us who enjoy our new found freedoms, such as legally recognised relationships owe Eoin so much. I hope that Eoin’s family take some comfort knowing that Eoin was held in such high esteem. We have lost a good man.

My deepest condolences to Eoin’s Mam and family. Eoin was a beautiful, gentle being. I worked with him in Nexus for a number of years in the late ‘90s and he became a dear friend. He was serious and light in equal measure, a true trailblazer having been to the forefront and setting the stage for achieving monumental change in Ireland around issues of equality and diversity. He was completely his own person. Modest and so very brave. He questioned everything and thought everything through. He was never swayed this way or that but always stayed on his own path.

As a friend, he was just the best- warm, open, caring and always up for a laugh with an amazing ability to look outside of himself and situations to find the humour. There were only a few weeks between us in age and we gathered we were both in Holles St. at the same time as newborns. Conversations with Eoin nearly always touched on the existential, in particular ageing and we had many discussions on growing older and how and what that looked like. I am very saddened Eoin that you went before you reached old age but yours was a life truly lived and I will be eternally grateful for having had you as the beautiful friend that you were. You will be forever in my heart xx

Eoin was central to a remarkable group of men who expertly, gracefully and tenaciously led our country through a legislative and policy revolution. They created the contexts for radical progressive cultural change.
Yet, mostly when I think of Eoin I see his beautiful smile and what fun he was and how he would openly share what was really going on with him. He was wonderful to speak with on a one-to-one basis, everyone who got that kind of chat with Eoin came away feeling better about themselves and better about the world.
I am very glad that he and Josep found each other and sad for all of us that their beautiful lives were not longer.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Eoin was one of a kind, brilliant, hilarious and Trojan. He made a unique contribution to making Ireland fairer, a decent place to live for LGBT people and for helping us define ourselves as a nation.
