In New Zealand we were shocked and saddened at Eric’s sudden death.
Eric lived the life he wanted, loved his farm, never wanting to be anything but a farmer.By my observation he always went beyond the norm in his care of his animals, which was lovely to see. I think it will be a long time before we see the likes of him again.In the past, the Cunningham house in Ballybotemple was a second home to my sister Sarah, and I coming down from Belfast. In earlier years Aunt Lizzie, Uncle Bob, and later Jimmy and Jenny loved to know we were coming and made us very welcome. On their passing Eric carried on that role and warmly greeted my wife Sylvia and I on our numerous trips from New Zealand, always wanting us to extend our visit. Eric had a very inquiring mind, and retentive memory as his father had. We often talked for over one hour on the land phone, he was full of information of what was happening around the Ballybotemple area, always interested in our family, some of whom he had met, and also NZ in general. We loved him and will miss him, we will cherish our memories of Eric and his farm even more now. R.I.P. Eric.
