Dear Ronagh and family,

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Skat Consulting we are sending our heartfelt condolences on Erich’s passing.

I had the privilege of getting to know him while working for SKAT from 2002 to 2008. I remember him as a very friendly, helpful and modest person who was an expert in hand pump technology. Thanks to his knowledge he helped many people in numerous countries to gain access to safe drinking water. During our many working lunches in St. Gallen, I enjoyed his company and sense of humour.

I will always remember him as a very kind and generous man who truly made the world a better place.

i surely cannot do better than my colleagues - I echo every single word of praise for an extraordinary human being. A treasured friend and mentor to so many of us who knew and had the privilege to work with him.
I first met him in Pakistan where his insight into the Afridev handpump
improved its reliability and efficiency to become the standard handpump in the country and as Sean Furey so saliently put it '... it improved the lives
of hundreds of thousands of rural folk.....'

For the first few months after we met, I was much in awe of Erich
but within a relatively short time we became fast friends. His company
was always stimulating and he had a cheeky yet subtle and clever sense of humour.

Erich was both admired and loved by so many people from a wide spectrum of backgrounds and will be sorely missed by the rural water community His beloved wife Ronagh and sons can take pride in their family that meant the world to Erich.

Thinking of you all Ronagh, Toby and Kevin on the loss of Erich. May he rest peacefully.

I am very sad to hear this news. My sincere condolences to Ronagh and the family. I first met Erich about 25 years ago when we worked together on rural water supply and handpump related projects. In particular, we were both on the RWSN steerng committee for several years and spent many enjoyable times together. His good humour, wisdom and humility were always apparent, as well as his obvious love for his family. His professional legacy lives on in helping millions acess safe and sustainable water services. Condolences to Ronagh and the family. It is no exaggeration to say that tens of millions of people have had longer, healthier lives because of his pioneering work on handpumps and rural water supply, and the alliances that he built over many, many years. I never had the opportunity to work with him, but as a successor to his work, he is and will always be one of my heroes. I enjoyed his company and I'm sad that I will never another opportunity to quiz him about Afridev U-seals.

Erich, you have been such a force in the WASH sector. You did so much to strengthen capacity in developing countries around hand pump technologies for sustainability. Personally, you met and moulded me from a young age into a confident sector professional. Your contribution to the sector has been immense and will last a long time.

I’m so sorry to hear about Erich.

He was a gifted engineer, had the interests of the poor at heart, was humble and dedicated to his work.
It was a pleasure and privilege to work alongside Erich.

Such sad, sad news.

Erich was an outstanding development practitioner and an inspirational friend and mentor to me and to many, many others in the quest to bring safe drinking water to poor rural communities around the world.

He was also a brilliant yet pragmatic water engineer, adapting technology to local circumstance and becoming a pre-eminent authority on handpump engineering. His brainchild and lasting legacy is The Rural Water Supply Network, a global forum with a membership of tens of thousands, mostly in developing countries.

Erich was a humanist at heart, generous, kind and supremely understated with the rare gift of balancing the serious business of rural development with wry humour and great charm. He was a one off and is irreplaceable.

Our hearts go out to Ronagh, Kevin,Toby and their families. You were the love of his life.
