Although I did not know your Mam Erika, she sounds like an amazing person loved by so many. I am so sorry to hear of her passing especially at this difficult time. May she rest in peace and hopefully reunited with those she loved.

Erika’s connection with my family began in the late 1960s, after both families had moved to Galway. I first met her and Tim when they were guests of my parents. Some time later, during a year when it was not possible for my school to provide a German teacher for Markus and myself, Erika provided the tuition at home. This was critical for me, providing continuity of structured lessons in German. (Dafür bin ich sehr dankbar!) We also met occasionally at the Lutheran services at the United Methodist and Presbyterian Church in Galway. It has been a privilege to experience Erika’s friendship, warm positivity, and open welcome. Sie hat sich nicht vorbei geeilt, sondern hat sie die Zeit genommen unsere Freundschaft zu schaffen, und sich darüber zu kümmern. May she rest in peace.

Tim, Brigitte and all of the family, my sincerest sympathies for your sad loss. Your mother was a wonderful woman, so sad to hear this news.

However, I have thought of Erika several times over the years, such was her affect on me. She really was a wonderful person. May she rest in peace.

I will miss Erika’s kind words of wisdom, her generous non judgmental nature, her enthusiastic positivity & her general interest in life.

Wir trauern sehr um den Verlust von Erika. An alle erster Stelle war sie natürlich die beste Freundin von Ingrid. Sie war die größte und liebenswerteste Kritikerin von ihr. Eine lebenslange Freundschaft war es, die beide verband. Auch in schwierigen Zeiten war sie für mich, Christoph, eine wichtige Ansprechpartnerin gerade wenn es um meine Mutter Ingrid gingauch im Alter konnten wir sie immer wieder spitzbübisch und jugendlich erleben. Sie war aber auch eine sehr fürsorgliche Person, alleine wenn sie von der telefonseelsorge erzählte. Dass sie nicht immer alle fünfe gerade sein dies, war eine sehr erfrischende Eigenschaft! Wir sind sehr froh und dankbar sie kennengelernt zu haben und auch in den letzten Tagen ihres Lebens waren wir sehr über euch Kinder mit ihr verbunden. Vielen vielen Dank dafür. Es ist schön, dass Erika und Ingrid sich jetzt irgendwo wieder begegnen können! Viele liebe Grüße Christoph, Cora und Luna

Liebe Erika,

viele wunderschöne Erinnerungen werden immer mit dir verbunden sein. Angefangen mit den Besuchen in Irland und der Küche im Haus Taunus und deiner Art wie du mit den Sachen umgegangen bist. Über eine Wanderung von Usingen nach Kranzberg die du mit uns Kindern gemacht hast. Dabei sind wir in einem Gasthaus eingekehrt und ich habe dabei gelernt eine bekannte Situation mit völlig anderen Augen zu sehen. Bishin zu deinen Besuchen in Usingen oder den zufälligen Treffen in Frankfurt. Immer bist du mir und später auch Cintia mit deinem offenen Wesen begegnet und hast um dich herum eine zuversichtlichen Einstellung zum Leben verbreitet die angsteckend war.

einen letzten, liebevollen, stillen Gruß aus deiner Geburtsstadt Usingen möchte ich Dir senden! Du warst in sehr wichtigen Situationen in meinem Leben eine liebevolle, mütterliche Begleiterin und Freundin und hast meinem Lebensweg entscheidende Richtungen gegeben.
Sicher ist es auch kein Zufall, dass schließlich Usingen, Deine Geburtsstadt, zu meiner Heimat geworden ist, als Du sie schon lange verlassen hattest, um Deinem Ehemann Tim zu folgen.
Ich danke Dir für Deine Fürsorge, Aufmerksamkeit und dein bezauberndes Lächeln und für die wunderschönen Tage in Deiner Familie, sowie für Deine unaufdringliche Gegenwart, als ich später auch längere Zeit in Deiner wunderschönen Wahlheimat Irland leben durfte.
Ich habe wunderbare Erinnerungen an die ganze Familie Casey, an Markus, Brigitte, Timothy und später auch Margaret, die damals schon in Italien lebte. Ich wünsche der Familie Casey ganz viel Kraft und jeden nur erdenklichen Trost!

Éadaoin, Eoghan and all the grandchildren: your stoic grace at this time embodies the values of your beautiful Oma. Our sympathies to each of you, to Margaret, Brigitte, Timo and all the family. The more your loss the more your family gives to others and we’re all the better for this.

Erika and her late husband Tim (Professor of German) are fondly remembered here at NUI Galway and by their many former students as wonderful teachers and tremendously kind people. They made this a great place to be. My sincere sympathy to all her family.

Dear Margaret, Timo and Brigitte,
I was so sorry to hear of your mother's death. She was such an addition to the German Dept in Galway, more a mother to the students than a tutor, or rather somebody who took the original idea of the Latin word to its utmost, combining professional teaching with personal concern for each and every one of her students.
Not only was I in a position to observe her at work but my youngest sister actually benefited from Erika's kindness and skills. Then there were the happy day's, the combined ceremony of Brigitte's wedding with Anna's baptism with a reception in the Old Mill and also the sad days of your dad's funeral and Markus's tragic death. I remember too when visiting friends from Germany lost a baby when visiting your parents and how kind they were to them at that tragic time.
When I retired in 2011 and was about to depart to Rome for six years, Erika sent me a very warm and mischievous letter, reminding me of another friar from northern Europe who crossed the Alps to head for Rome!!
Please accept this expression of my deepest sympathy. I will offer mass for Erika tomorrow.

I had the great honour of meeting Erika many years ago and learning some short but life long lessons from her in our short time together. She embodied acceptance and kindness, and reached our her hand to many to give them her support when they most needed it.

In this time of world crisis, I think the example and tenets Erika lived by, could now make a beautiful blueprint for what our world needs going forward.

I hope her fellow angels welcome her home. May she rest in eternal peace.
