I have many good memories of Eugene from over the years through our mutual friendships and shared hobbies. He loved music, films, hillwalking and travel. He had lots of interests and seemingly limitless energy for all of them.

He also had his cross to bear. But although others might have felt sorry for him, if Eugene ever suspected you pitied him, he’d take your pity and throw it right back in your face! In the 7 years I knew him I never once noticed him feeling sorry for himself, or thinking of himself as deserving of anyone else's pity. Even while in hospital, no matter what he may have been going through either internally or externally, he always chose to appear as upbeat as humanly possible.

My enduring memory of Eugene will always be of a young man with a unique and lively personality. With an irrepressible spirit, who was seemingly always able to locate fun and excitement somewhere within his immediate vicinity! Yet who also showed courage and determination in the face of continued adversity. A man who had a deep love of life and of his family, who never despaired, and who possessed a boundless enthusiasm for everything he did.

Rest in peace, my friend.
