He was the type of man that you could quickly become friends with and enjoy a bit of craic.

Twenty years ago, Tom and I were packing up our house in New York to move to Aughakillymaude. When we arrived, many greeted us, but a few people took us under their wings and made it feel like home.
Eugene Murphy was one of those people.
His daughter, Kiara, was also living in Aughakillymaude at the time, and the two of them would often visit—mock us for forgetting to offer them tea, giggle and joke with our young daughters. He invited us over many times for dinners or the occasional party, and we traveled with him and his family to watch Fermanagh play well into the GAA championship run that year.
Sometime during our stay, his son Ryan arrived too, and became very close with our family. In the short window of time that our lives were interconnected, Ryan, Kiara, and Eugene all, in their own ways, became a permanent part of our family story.
Even after Tom died and I took the young McManus clan back to America, these three stayed with us in stories and memories.
I was able to see Eugene on one of my last visits, and of course he had me and my friend crying with laughter for the few hours we spent with him. It brings me so much sadness—more than I expected—to hear of his passing.
I wanted to leave this note since I can’t be there in person. For Ryan, Kiara, and the extended Murphy family: know that Eugene is remembered and loved in more places than you could fathom. May he rest in perpetual peace.

My sincere condolences on the passing of dear Eugene. He was definitely 'one of a kind' and the very first cousin I met in 1981 when he visited Australia. His joy of life, ability to have fun and to tell a story will be remembered by so many people in Australia. Although he travelled the world and had friends all over, his heart was always in Derrylin.
