Fergus Finnegan

Innumerable people are privileged to have known Fergus.
A man of no pretence who has enriched the lives of many.
I first met him in late Matt Kiernan's (1898-17th July 1986) house (19 Offaly Rd, Cabra, Dublin) - we had a common
interest in Uilleann Pipes.
We last met on Saturday 16th July 2016 at a Mass for Matt's 30th Anniversary in Christ The King Church in Cabra.
My sympathy to Elaine,other family members and friends.
Let's hope Fergus experiences the Celestial Music.

It is with great shock and sadness that I came across the death notice of this lovely man today.
Pieter and I would like to extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends.
He was a lovely neighbour with a wonderful smile.

Elaine, Aisling and Adam, I was so sorry to hear of Fergus' passing.
He was a great colleague and friend during our time in Deloitte- when the conversation wasn't about VAT it was music and there were many such conversations.

So shocked and saddened to learn just now of Fergus's sad passing. We had planned to meet up when he was feeling better. I knew him mainly through work for over 30 years. Even when we didn't chat for a long time we would immediately pick up where we left off. I visited him in his workshop many times when I was on business in Ashbourne and he was such relaxing company that our chat and reminiscences could go on for hours.  My sympathies to all the family.

Taking this opportunity to send my deepest condolences to Elaine Aisling and Adam as well as Fergus’ extended family and friends on the passing of a true gentleman.

Also apologies I could not attend his funeral as I am abroad at present.

I worked with Fergus in Revenue and enticed him to jump ship to what was Simpson Xavier (now BDO) many years ago.

He was a very good friend and colleague, loved irish music even more than Tax and was always in good humour despite the significant challenges that life threw at himself and his close knit family.

We kept in regular contact over the years and were lucky to
Meet up again late last year together with a few of the original Simpson
Xavier / BDO VAT team.

He had a very tough last couple of years and even speaking with him
During his illness his main focus was on trying to help his family recover from the tragic death of one of his daughters c. 2 years ago.

Fergus will be sadly missed but at least his suffering is now over. He.gave a fantastic account of himself as a family man, musician, friend, colleague and indeed tax advisor prior to his untimely death.

May he rest in peace!

I worked with Fergus many years ago in Revenue, and he very kindly loaned me a practice set of uileann pipes for my husband, who had for ages wanted to learn how to be a piper. As so many others here have said, he was such a generous, kind man, a great colleague and a pleasure to know. Our sincere sympathies to Elaine, Aisling and Adam, and all the Finnegan family on this terrible loss. Sadly missed by all who knew him.

I knew Fergus through Uilleann Piping and treasure his kindness and friendship. Reading other tributes , I see that he radiated the same warmth and joy to colleagues and those of us who were fortunate to know him through his pastimes.

I spoke to him a few months ago after the loss of his daughter Claire. His love for family shone through and inspired me ; He spoke of her presence that he still felt .

Our condolences to Elaine and her family on the sad passing of Fergus. Among other things, he will be sadly missed in the Irish traditional music community. A great piper and instrument maker, his generosity, good humour and friendship were boundless.

Deeply saddened to hear of Fergus’s passing. He was out with me before he started treatment and we spent a lovely morning making spruce reed blanks and trying his chanters. I worked with him on the new income tax section for pipemakers and harpmakers. Beautiful, honourable and decent man.
