Final part of Alex’s speech at Lola’s funeral
A lesson I will never forget which she passed on to me from her own father was, ‘ You are a Dowling and can do whatever you set your mind to’. This among other things greatly impacted my perspective of the world and motivates me in how I go about my life and to work hard. Earlier this year I found myself temporarily living with my Lola as I was attending summer Irish college, my Lola would drive me every morning and afternoon to and from school. In the evening to my surprise we would speak to each other in Irish. She would make such an effort, try so hard to help me and I will always be grateful for this and all the memories we cherish. Lola, I will always love you, thank you. Beidh gra agam duit i gconai, go raibh maith agat. Slan Lola

Alex’s speech at Lola’s funeral (part 2)
Since John John passed we have shared so many beautiful memories with her and she has had so many wonderful experiences. She continued her passion of travelling the world and exploring new places. There wasn’t really anywhere in the world she hadn’t been that she wanted to go to. I think she had gone to about 80 countries. She retained her love of genealogy learning about generations of Dowling and Kelly ancestors. She spent quality time with us. Lola had her bridge and book club friends in Dalkey. She had a cinema club in Dun Laoghaire. Lola wasn’t unknown in the Queen’s, Dalkey Duck & Bubba’s. She travelled to Iceland with my Dad and myself last year. The two of them were like children telling me we were flying to Galway for my birthday. No matter where we are in the world we bring her habits with us. One thing she used to do which would drive my Dad mad, we would be walking up and down past dozens of restaurants, apparently we were going for lunch. But she would say ‘ There is no rush we had a big breakfast.’ We would then keep walking for what to my Dad started to seem like a few more hours and by this stage he was gnawing on his arm. Lola would often then say ‘ Do we really need Lunch ?’ (Continued)

Alex’s speech at Lola’s funeral - pt 1
Hello everyone I’m Alex, Flora’s grandson. When I was very little, I couldn’t say ‘ Flora’ and so have always called her ‘Lola’ and my grandfather ‘ John John’. My aunt Tara says her Mum never wanted to be called granny and was really chuffed to become Lola. There were many unique quirks of having such wonderful grandparents. I have countless memories of growing up with them, playing with them and learning with them. They moulded me into the person I am today, I share many of their characteristics and hold the lessons they taught me close to heart. Every single fond memory had such an impact on me. A few years ago, John John passed away, it wasn’t easy on any of us, especially Lola. Lola was heartbroken. I’m told they could never remember if their first date was 1985 or 1986. I’ve overheard chat that he ‘spoiled her’. But famously he put his foot down when she wanted a dog. He said ‘ I like elephants as well as dogs but I’m not walking one of those either when you’ve gone away on your own.’ We all mourned with her, we supported her, and she stayed strong despite overwhelming grief. She kept going. (Continued)

Sincerest sympathy to Floras family on her sad passing, may she rest in peace. Grace Geraghty (Dalkey Book Club)
On behalf of her neighbours in Pilot View, sincere condolences to all the Dowling family on the death of Flora.
My deepest sympathies to Arran and your family on the passing of your Mother, Flora Dowling. May she rest in peace.
Very sorry to hear of the passing of Flora. We will remember her with fondness always. May she rest in peace.
For me the best word to describe Flora is a “character “ and more precisely an unapologetic character. her “everybody loved him” departed husband John was all in on any of her requests, that is subtle demands. It was an amazing relationship which I believe was a heavy burden for her to carry after his demise.
Flora will be remembered for her inquiring mind. She had an intuitive sense, was fair minded and would most often try to appease.
For sure, there was and always will be just one Flora.
Sincerely Dave Coutts ( brother in law)
