We were very sorry to hear of the sudden and untimely death of Fr Cathal. Our deepest condolences to Marie, Bernadette, Hugo, your families, all the Gallagher family circle and his Columban family in Ireland and Peru.
The last time we met Cathal was on 30th August 2021 when he slipped quietly into the Melvin Bar to extend some special birthday wishes. While there, he chatted about his interesting life choices and regaled us with stories of the teenage schoolboy ‘adventures’ of himself and Michael. When we dropped him off in Carran West on our way home, little did we think that it would be our last conversation with him.
In his priestly ministry Cathal has left an indelible mark on so many, especially in Lima, Peru, where he worked tirelessly among some of the most vulnerable people in challenging circumstances, leaving behind a wonderful legacy. Rest in peace, Cathal, which you so richly deserve, in the Heavenly home with your loved ones gone before you.

Dear Bernadette, Marie, Hugo and the Missionary Society of St. Columban, my deepest condolences to you all on the sad and sudden death of your dear brother. I met Cathal in February 1972, when as not long grown boys, we joined 22 other young hopefuls in Tempelmore, Co Tipperary with ambition to become members of An Garda Síochána. In late June of that year along with 19 others, we achieved that ambition. Cathal was assigned to Navan in Co Meath, thereby heralding his introduction to the Columban society in Dalgan Park and the invaluable legacy he leaves behind in Lima, Peru.
