Fr. Damian Smullen

May Fr Rest in Peace.

I noticed a van parked on the side of the road near Collooney yesterday, it bore the name Smullen and Damien came to mind.

We were classmates and Sligo men in Maynooth. Sadly I lost contact with him through the years. The van brought him to mind and I renembered his caring ways and wonderful musical talent and decided to get in touch with him.

In the past half hour, I Googled his name in the hope of finding a contact address in Canada. Little did I think that the first Google mention would be his death notice. I am shocked, saddened and sorry that the years did not include contact.

Reading through messages here, I am moved by the comments of those who knew him in ministry. Clearly he made a difference, was loved and able to return that love. This does not surprise me.

I truly hope he is at peace and am confident he will be rewarded for the difference he made.

I am glad we met, sorry that he has died and convinced he made a significant contribution to the best of what life has to offer.

God bless his family. May Damian rest in the peace and company of those gone before him and bring comfort and strength to those he leaves behind.

Will offer Mass for him, his family, co-diocesans and friends. I wish i saw the van sooner.

Dear family,

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Father Damian's passing. Father Damian brought to Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, and was so generous in giving of his love to the people. So many of the people here loved him deeply and are grieving his passing I and they, stand in solidarity with you in your pain and grief.

I have already presided in a mass for him and for you. I send you healing love and healing prayers.

Father Damian was so unforgettably 'present' with all his heart to all he encountered. His very beingness was ''prayer'', and that prayer touched the hearts and lives of so many. His homilies were filled with 'real' and with our Lord Jesus Christ in the light of real life , pain , beauty, gratitude.
The very last words I heard Father say were these . I was following him out of St Anne's Peterborough after a funeral Mass; the person ahead was having a difficult time and Father Damian whispered into his ear, '' Jesus Loves You ''.

What a genuine gift this fella was to me and many. A Priest, extraordinaire. It is far and few between that we get the chance to meet men of the Jesus-kind, priest or not.
Father Damian Smullen was such a man, the humble kind inclusive, loving Jesus-kind.

Fr. Damian was my parish priest at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Lakefield and also taught me in high school. He was an example of a good priest who put his heart and soul into his vocation. He forever changed St. Paul the Apostle Church for good and I am grateful to have grown up with his pastoral leadership. There are too many memories of Fr. Damian to recount from the times spent altar serving at evening Masses, his presence at family and community events and even enjoying his occasional Irish dance performance. As a teacher he was open and forever entertaining....I think I spent a lot of time laughing through class! His presence on earth is greatly appreciated and will be forever missed. My condolences to his family who are grieving his loss.

Father Damian was one of the best priests I've ever met. His coming to Lakefield revived our parish when I was a teenager. He encouraged me to participate in my parish by altar serving and taught me to be proud of my faith. He was sincere, humorous and approachable, and my wife and I are very grateful that he was a priest in Peterborough for so long. He baptized one of our daughters. He was also a talented guitarist, and I'll always remember him playing Simon and Garfunkel music.
