Sincere condolences to Father David’s family or “Pop McGuinness” as he was affectionately known. He gave so much to St Paul’s Youth Movement. He believed in us and pushed us to be the best we could be. I’ll never forget the student exchange with the kids in Gainesville Georgia. Rest in Peace

Fr. Dave McGuinness was a true friend, a stalwart companion, and a man that brought a smile to every face he encountered! He always saw the humor in life and made it present to us.
His priesthood was blessing to sinners...especially this one! When I told a mutual friend of his passing, his comment said it best: "Behold, a great priest! May God rest his beautiful soul!"
With my hearing deficit and the softness of his voice as his disease took its toll, we haven’t been able to talk for a number of years. Regardless, he remained in my heart and prayers. That is where he’ll stay!
My sincere condolences to his family in his passing from this life…

Father David meant so much to our family and to everyone at Saint Josephs (Athens). His warm smile and gentle manner always made us feel loved and welcomed. We’ve missed his presence since he retired but some how, knowing he was still in this world brought us comfort. May his soul rest in sweet slumber now in the arms of our Lord. We love and miss you, my favorite “little Irishman” ❤️
Our deepest condolences to the McGuinness family. Fr. David was one of the major reasons we moved to Athens, GA in 2006. We had gone to mass at St. Joseph’s Church in Athens to see if we would like to move our family here. Fr. David saw us and asked if we would like to bring up the offertory. It was like a sign from God that this move was what He wanted for us. For the next decade or so, Fr. David became such an inspiring and guiding light, helping us with our spiritual growth and raising our 4 children. His kindness and witty sense of humor will always be remembered, but most of all, I will treasure the times he came to visit me when I was in ICU, despite his busy schedule. His presence always gave me peace and I would cry tears of comfort as he forgave my sins and told me that God loves me. Rest in peace our dear Fr. David, and may God grant you all the treasures of heaven, because you deserve every bit of it. You’ll be in our prayers always. 💕
We miss you every day.
Sincere sympathy to Fr Davids family.

I was a parishioner of Saint Joseph’s during some of the time Father David was the Pastor. We moved to Athens in 2004. Not long after we moved to Athens , Father David introduced Christ Renews His Parish weekend retreat. I met several ladies of the parish then and renewed my faith in the Trinity.I then was involved in two other retreats , one for a church in Monroe that started them with their retreats.
My Dad moved down from northern Indiana , and in 2018 went to a retreat to Lourdes, Fatima, and Santiago de Compestella in Spain. My Dad , now gone, was Methodist, but loved Father David’s homilies and David really made an impression on my Dad. Father David was very kind, thoughtful and definitely a character! He talked of going to the holy land , which we all knew was Ireland.
Know that the parishioners of Saint Joseph and Sue Varee Lawrence loved him so much.

I asked the ladies of the Catholic center Thursday night to pray for you, his family.

St Joseph's church and school mourn the departure of our beloved, Father David McGuinness. Each morning as I walk into the chapel I read the psalm he left for us as a guide to life. It states, "Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain." Psalm 127:1

He established our community in a beautiful property, and you can feel God's presence as soon as you see the view. At the same time, the psalm is a reminder we should always put God first in all we do. To not lose sight of the Lord.

Father David was a wonderful spiritual director, an example of how to have Christ in our hearts, joked around with the choir, and was a wonderful friend to us all. Especially my family. When my daughter had cancer. He went above and beyond to show his love and support through prayers.

We are forever grateful to met such an incredible man. He touch our lives with his actions and words and will be missed. May God grant all his family and friends peace during this difficult time. God bless!
Our family of eight worshiped at St. Joseph, Athens for many years, and Father David was almost one of the family. So many sacraments and church services were administered by him while he was our pastor.
For 12 years I served as his housekeeper, and I could share some interesting stories about the time spent with him!
He was a holy priest, and we called him Father, but preferred to all him Friend!
We are so sad at the passing of our dear Fr. David, and send condolences to his family. We heard so many loving stories about his family and his well loved Ireland. Fr. David was a gentle servant of God and a fierce steward of guiding God’s people. We will be forever grateful for his time in Athens, Georgia. He brought the parish together, built strong bonds, made people feel like they belong and moved the parish to do big things together. His memory will live on in all the lives he touched, in our church grounds and St. Joseph Catholic Parish School. May he rest in peace.
Sincere condolences to Denis and all the McGuinness family on the passing of Fr. David. May he Rest In Peace.
My prayers and blessings are with the family during this difficult time. Fr. David was one of the first priests I became close to. I was Parish Council president with him and served in other ministries with him at St. Joseph’s in Athens, GA. I went to Ireland with him in 2014 and it was such a great trip. I have so many fond memories of him - he will be missed!
Our most sincere condolences to all the family and dear friends of our beloved, Padre David. Thank you, for sharing him with us in Athens, Ga, for so many years. He was instrumental to my spiritual growth and the growth of the Catholic Church, in our community. Thanks to his vision, perseverance and faithful work, this will continue to produce fruit for generations.
Personally, he was a dear, dear friend, and I greatly miss him.
May the Lord receive his soul and give you all, consolation. May he rest in the Peace of the Lord.
There are no words to express my sadness that our sweet, loving pastor and friend is no longer here on earth to share his words of wisdom with us. I was serving on the parish council when he arrived in Athens, GA, USA, and he took over the difficult task of guiding our parish. He introduced the CRHP program to us, and we will be forever grateful. From sharing Mass, meetings, meals, pilgrimages, or just being together, he always put others first. I know that he is no longer in pain, and that brings me comfort in my sadness. I rejoice that he is in the arms of Jesus and his blessed mother.
Well done, good and faithful servant.
Sincere sympathy to Fr. Dave's family on his sad passing. He was so kind and gentle always. We were honoured to have him officiate at our wedding and at our first child's Christening many years ago when he was in Waterford. Rest in peace Fr. Dave.
