Fr. Hugo was a father, a mentor and a spiritual guide to many of us and to me most especially in my formation years in Iperu. I remembered how he patiently journeyed with me, a boy who came from a very noisy environment of Lagos to be patiently journeyed with on the beauty and internal peace of silence in contemplation and meditation.
Fr. Hugo, thank you for all your hard work, your helpful guidance, selfless service and solid formation you worked hard for in the missionary society of St. Paul of Nigeria.
May your soul rest in peace.

You were everything to us, we the Pioneer students of yours at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Mfamosing, Calabar Diocese, in Cross River State, Nigeria . On behalf of the Class of 75 and all those that follow we say thank you for all the many years of selfless service and sacrifices you made to change our lives immeasurably. Fr. Hugo Mcbride was my mentor and the first, and really the only spiritual director who knew how to connect with us raw young MSP aspirants to the priesthood. Now he is gone. I met him first in 1986, and my life changed. I feared his piercing gaze but found out later that behind those eyes and that giant size was a compassionate and kind man. He was deep, frank, pragmatic, contemplative, intelligent, spontaneous, witty, and he could preach! He contributed most to the development of the spiritual year program that has formed and changed many MSPs and Nigerians. I am glad he came down for our silver Jubilee in 2020. I will miss him! He was a sweet man and lover of the deep mysteries of God. God console his family. May his beautiful soul rest in peace. Amen.

My sincere condolences to the family of Fr Hugo McBride. I've never met him but I've benefited from the formation to the priesthood he helped to put together. May he be rewarded for his labours. May his soul rest in peace!
Writing from The Mission in France!

Fr Hugo was my teacher and formator in 1991-92 in Nigeria. He attended the celebration of my priestly ordination silver jubliee on June 24 in St Bridget Church, Newry.
Hugo is an amazingly deep, brutally honest, uncompromisingly spiritual, kind, compassionate and lovely man.
Hugo is like an oracle in my congregation, Missionary Society of St Paul where he laboured tirelessly for so many years.

I was blessed to meet this year

Fr Hugo was a great friend to the McCullough family, especially to Joseph and our parents, George and Cassie. It was an honour to have known him. God be good to Hugo.

I thank the Almighty God for the gift of beloved Fr. Hugo McBride. His missionary ministry brought him to Nigeria. He was the Rector of our minor Seminary of Immaculate Conception, Mfamosing, Cross River State during its beginnings.

May God grant him eternal rest in his kingdom. I will offer Masses for his repose. May his soul rest in perfect peace.
