He was the stuff of legend without the books… wait, he did write a few books, yarns as he called them. Not bodice rippers but sharp, creative stories with a wealth of detail, technical and philosophical as befits a man who could have done anything but did do everything. For most of us nephews and nieces he was this rather exotic, somewhat sallow skinned visitor that arrived home every 5 or 6 years from Swaziland. Later as either teenagers or adults we learned more about the extraordinary work he did ( with many other in the various religious orders ) in Swaziland and elsewhere.
Stories abound, from inherited planes from smugglers, to wrangling free container loads of soap or ladies underwear from various companies to the gift, restoration and donation of a Model T Ford to the gift of a medieval manuscript or Purdy shotgun. You couldn’t dream it up.
Indeed a legend and for the Somers Clan, the end of an era. He has passed on the torch but I’m not sure we that are left can do it justice. He was a quiet hero and in a time when we need more heros, it will be difficult to measure up. But at least we have our template. He can be our inspiration.

To the family and friends of Fr Somers, may I offer my deepest sympathies.
I worked as a 'Goalie' nurse in Malindza refugee camp, Swaziland with Fr Somers for a couple of years. He was so kind to me, making sure I had transportation, keeping the goal jeep serviced and in good working order. When I was finished working in the camp, he lent me his own van for the last few weeks I was in Swaziland. His door was always open to me. I knew I had a friend and someone to turn to if I needed help. A life well lived. May he rest in peace. Eileen

Rip Fr Somers we were always gaurented to be told a great story when you visited us during class in St Patricks where you helped to prepare us for both communion and confirmation. Thinking of your friends/family and the staff of St Patrick's school that had the pleasure of working with you over the years 💙
Fr James was a great uncle I have so many happy memories of the tuck shop in the college and all his stories about Swaziland. May he rest in peace. I hope himself and Brendan continue the chats they used to have wherever it may be
With the most fond memories from Swaziland 1969 till 1974, when Fr. Somers assisted us organising bursaries for many of the boys at Salesian High school.
Later, during the 1980's, Fr. Somers organised for us to have GOAL nurses come to Swaziland to help setting up community nursing at the Mozambican refugee camps.
Forever grateful for Fr. Somer's valuable assistance and his kindness.
