I was very sorry yesterday to hear that Fr Martin had passed - I have lived away for many years but remember him well from my Order of Malta days (ex-OIC, Crumlin Unit). I have cherished memories of our times together in Clyde Road, Moate and Lourdes etc . Condolences to all his friends and family. RIP.
I came to know Fr Martin almost 50 years ago when he can’t to Moate as a young adventurers priest when the college was in full swing both himself and Fr Langan transferred the Town of Moate and its surrounding area dedicating their live for the young kids starting Scouting and Order of Malta and Tennis Open Weeks eventually he opened one of Irelands first Senior citizens day care centre. He was more than just a local priest he became a friend and family member and he married Joan and I in 1985. Martin started the Carmelite Lourdes Pilgrimage in Moate with the help of Mrs Ledwith and my Mother Maggie Higgins. Both he and a small group of people were the driving force behind this magnificent adventure taking thousands of sick and vulnerable people whom would never have been able to get to Lourdes were it not for Martin and that small group of people from Moate for over 40 years. Martin eating bread is soon forgotten but the people of Moate will not forget what you gave to the sick and poor people of this Town. Rest peacefully Martin I’m glad you were a part of both my family and my journey through life and until we meet again safe passage on your journey to Heaven and St Bernadette
