Is is with great sadness that we learn of the death of Fr Michael.We got to know him during his time in St Augustins here in Galway and kept in touch over the years he was in Cork.
He was such a lovely,kind man and a joy to be in his company.

I’m sorry I never got a chance to meet him. It’s comforting to know that he took his last breath on Earth surrounded by people who loved and cared for him and he took his first breath in Heaven in the arms of our Lord. Sincere condolences to the Leahy family, the care staff in Ballyboden, and to the Augustinian community and on the sad passing of their beloved confrère, Fr. Michael. While mourning his great loss it is also timely to celebrate his immense contribution to the Augustinian Order in Ireland – as Claudius remarks in Hamlet, “in equal scale weighing delight and woe.” He was a towering presence in St. Augustine’s in Cork over many years punctuated by his wisdom, serenity, and geniality. Fr. Michael was an outstanding preacher, and many a congregation was inspired by his exegesis and reflection on the Gospel of the day. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
After a lifetime of faithful service, the following lines from Shakespeare’s Cymbeline are appropriate for Fr. Michael:
“Fear no more the heat o’ the sun
Nor the furious winter’s rages;
Thou thy wordly task has done,
Home art gone and ta’en thy wages.”

Rest in peace Fr Der. You were truly a wonderful man. I have so many memories of visiting you in Cork with my parents during the summers when we went to see Maunie and Willy. Always a smile and so happy to meet everyone. The memory that stands out the most for me is when you travelled to Poland to take part in my wedding ceremony - we were so moved to have you there and to have made the long journey over. You will be deeply missed by everyone who knew you. May you rest in peace.

As a boy at St. Augustine's College, Dungarvan, in the 1950s, I knew Fr. Michael, who was then on the staff. A kind a gentle man, I re-connected with him in 1985 and we have met on occasion since then. Though God gave him an abundance of years, his death is a loss to many. May he now rest in the Lord's Peace. My sincere sympathies to the Augustinian community and to all of Fr. Michael's family.
