God rest his soul. A gentleman and a scholar who instilled in us a love of learning and philosophy. He introduced us to the wonders of Aristotle, Boethius and Aquinas, as well the treasures of the Church Fathers. A man of deep faith and great wit. Was a tremendous spiritual director and a profound influence on many of us. May he rest in the peace and promise of the risen Lord whom he served wholeheartedly.
I only became acquainted with Fr Nicholas about 4 years ago following my mother's death. They had both participated in the same philosophy module in Carlow. We corresponded at first and then met up a few times. Nicholas was great company, very learned but he carried it lightly, and had a mischievous wit. He enjoyed life to the full and laughed heartily and frequently. He was delightful company. We continued to correspond and I looked forward to receiving cards in his beautiful handwriting ( using the best of fountain pens). His message was always brief, concise and humourous in his own unique style. Nearly always ending in the 'cúpla focail ' in which he was fluent.

I realised that I hadn't heard from him in a while and feared the worst. So with great trepidation, I checked RIP and now I know why. I am greatly saddened that this lovely, kind energetic and erudite man is no longer with us. But I am sure that he has gone to his eternal reward. I am so glad that I got to know him and that I kept most of his cards and I will always treasure them.

Sincere condolences to his family and the Carmelite Community. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
Nicholas was a wonderful man. He was generous and kind and also a talented artist - I have the pleasure of looking at his pictures every day. I want to share my sympathy with his family and his brotherhood - I know he died in your care and that was his wish. I'll remember him fondly and will think of everyone who will also miss him in the coming months and years. Edwina

It is with sadness that I learned of Fr Nicholas' passing this evening. He was my teacher, my Spiritual Director, mo Anamcara. I have one very fond memory of a time when he was looking for a two word answer to one of his questions. Most struggled but from the back of the class Christy Lowry said in reticent tones, Fr, the answer is 'God is.' The piece of chalk that law loose on his lip felt to receive an almighty kick. Fr Nicholas lay on the floor in fits of joy and laughter. He brought such joy to our lectures and challenged us to think deeply. Rest in peace Fr Nicholas.
Sincerest sympathy to the cousins and Carmelite community on the death of Fr Nicholas Madden. May he rest in eternal peace.
To Fr Vincent, the Carmelite Community and the Flannery family. I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Fr Nicholas. A lovely friendly man, such a great intellect and a pleasure to have known. I have great memories of my many visits to Clarendon St. He now reunites with his former Carmelite Colleagues and fellow Tipperary men, Fr. Paul and Fr. Tadgh.
Rest in Peace, Fr Nicholas. Thank you for your friendship over the years, particularly the friendship you had with our late parents, Terence and Jennifer O’Reilly.

Ag smaoineamh ar na fir agus na mná in ord na gCairmeileach atá ar shlí na fírinne, go háirithe na hAithreacha Willie Moran, Robin Morrissey agus m'aintín féin an tSiúr Mary Veronica, suaimhneas síoraí orthu uilig. Beidh an tAthair Nicholas i gcomhluadar maith leo, i measc na naomh agus na n-aingeal.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis. 🙏
“Those who live in our memories are never truly gone”.This is very true as we celebrate the wonderful long life of Fr.Nicholas.He was a man of many talents and was blessed with a brilliant intellect. He lectured extensively on “I AM” and wrote on numerous topics .Even with his many accomplishments he was a prayerful humble man.He had the wonderful ability to relate to people both young and old in a special way and develop life long friendships. On his many visits to us down the years he never ceased to be fascinated and curious about the latest technologies which the grandchildren had acquired.
We wish to thank Fr.Vincent O’Hara and the Carmelite friars in Clarendon St.for the wonderful care they gave Fr.Nicholas.
In iothlann Dé go gcastar sinn.
Sad to hear about Fr. Nicholas's departure from this life. May he be enfolded in God's infinite light, love, peace and joy. He was a dear friend of the Clonfert Mercy Sisters as his two O'Brien cousins, Genevieve and Marie Therese, had entered in Loughrea. I always found him a very welcoming presence in Clarendon St. where he and the late Fr. Paul Sullivan had Tipperary roots in common! May all who will miss Fr. Nicholas, especially his Carmelite confreres be comforted at this time.

Thank you for Fr Nicholas for your love and support throughout my life and career. I was privileged that you “adopted” me, your cousins’ cousin. We both lost our mothers’ very young and you understood without words and more than anyone else how enormous was that void. You were always there for me, especially for life’s major events, both sad and happy. It was a joy how well you and my darling husband Derek (r.i.p.), of the Madden Clan, bonded in great friendship, and how much you loved my boys, Frank & David as a maternal granduncle. Your visit to us when we lived in Toulouse is one highlight of joy. I’m proud of your illustrious intellectual achievements as a doctor of philosophy, a Gaeilgóir, an artist, but mostly truly grateful for your deep humanity and compassion, and that we supported each other honestly with unconditional love at vulnerable times in our respective journeys through this life. I will miss you very much. With Love & Gratitude for a life well lived, Siobhán Lohan Madden ❤️
Sincere condolences to the Carmelite community, and to Fr Nicholas’s family and friends, on your loss. I was enriched greatly by the arrival of Fr Nicholas in Carlow College when I was on the staff there. He was a wonderful colleague and made an invaluable contribution to life in the seminary and also interacted with many lay students who began to attend modules of philosophy, theology and arts subjects in the College about 1989. May he rest in the peace of Christ.
