We send our prayers and condolence to the family from all members and past members of the Anchor Youth Centre Artane who Fr Oliver Powell was chaplain for over 50 years and helped many members in spiritual direction. He was involved in many of our trips to his beloved Arran Islands and trips abroad. He was involved in arranging the Kelly family who presented prayers from the Anchor members to St John Paul II for his visit to Ireland in 79. He will be sadly missed especially his good humour around young people.
I was very very sad and sorry to learn of the passing of Father Powell. I first met father Powell in the early 1960s when he was assisting a group of us to set up a youth club, which subsequently after reasoned debate was named the Harrow. I then got to know him really well when he arranged and accompanied us on a memorable trip to the Aran Islands..Over the years he was always available with a willing ear and a helping hand in times of need. I would like to pass my sincerest condolences to his Family and Religious Community. May his eternal Soul rest in the arms of Jesus.
Sincere sympathy to Colm, Eileen Ann and families. Fr Oliver and I struggled in class together in the Jes for many years in the forties up to the leaving cert in the early fifties He was always a very good friend. ‘Till we meet again Olly I’ll Be seeing you.
RIP Fr P. You had the heart and energy of a lion and a wicked sense of humour. Always quick to connect people and bring them into your “fold”. We had many adventures and stories when I lived in Ireland and your letters to NZ gave me great comfort. Though it’s been many years since we spoke, you leave a lasting impression. Best wishes to your family from an Irish girl in New Zealand.
Sincere sympathies to Fr. Oliver's family & friends, a true and dear friend sadly missed , may he rest in peace.
Dear Father P, I am heartbroken… I must begin by offering my condolences to his dear family and friends. This man meant so much to me. I met him when I was about 3 years old and he went on to give me my First Holy Communion and was the one to officiate at my marriage so many years later. I cannot begin to explain the importance of this man in my life and my utter gratitude to him. He was a total pillar in every way possible to me and my family. He literally saved my life when I was a child. I will never forget him talking of Josemaria Escriva particularly on that day in St Peter’s Square in Rome. May you Rest in Peace my most dearest Father Oliver Powell
